Default nail health - supplements. Critique mine

please.

I am starting to take my vitamins daily (before I'd miss them often).

Here are my vitamins:

1. Nature Made Multi For Her (calcium 25%, Iron 100%, Zinc 100%, Manganese 100%, A 60%, C 200%, D 100%, E 167%, Folic Acid 100%, K 125%, among others)

2. Acetyl L-Carnitine 40 mg and Alpha Lipoic 200 mg

3. C 500 mg

4. Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM

5. Fish OIl

6. Biotin 1500 mcg

7. Folic Acid 400 mcg

I added the Biotin and Folic Acid to hopefully promote nail growth, which isn't working. Maybe I need to make sure I take them daily though.

What do you think about the other vitamin/supplements?

Thanks for your thoughts. It seems like other people have more of a clue about their supplements.

First thing I would do is throw away the Natures Made vits. They are garbage. They use inorganic minerals and your body cannot assimilate these. They can actually cause deficiencies.

Take that stuff back and get a refund. Tell them those products do not agree with you.

Trust me ,cheap vitamins do you no good. Go to a health food store or go online and get some good quality sutff. Stay away form Costco,Walgreens and general gorcery store vitamin/minerals products.

How much fish oil are you taking? Try and get in 5 grams spread throughout the day.

all else looks good, but I would ad NAC and MSM to my program.

These are sulfur containing compunds and sulfur is critical for hair, skin and nails. You could take 500mgs 2x's of NAC a day and try and get 2 grams or more of MSM. It comes in a powder so you could take a teaspoon twice a day. I've seen this combo work wonders.

Also, look into Horestail..

Hope this helps

Default Yes, thanks.

What do you recommend in place of the Nature's Made multi?

GNC women's multi?

What is NAC?

I have some MSM mixed in with my Glucosamine/Chondroitin pill, but I don't know off hand how much.

Should I consider a multi-vitamin specifically made for nails (several ingredients), in conjunction with the other pills, including my multi?

I had been taking a GNC women's multi before.

Thanks.

GNC multis are pretty good. I like Natures Way and Supernutrition alot.

NAC is N-acetyl cystiene. It is an amino acid .It is a sulfur product. It is also an excellent antioxidant which helps to raise glutathione levels. Pretty cheap sutff. Twinlab has a nice one.

You'll need more MSM. You need some therpautic doses in you r case. I know some people who have taken 3 tsps a day which is 15 grams.

Default Silica, and I don't worry about nails

Horsetail rush is one form of silica; I now use Bio-sil drops which can probably be found in a good health-food store. 5 drops in water, once a day.

From a different direction, though: nails are merely an indicator, albeit not a bad one. Healthy nails indicate a generally health-supporting diet with enough protein. There are WAY more important tissues than nails, when it comes to protein synthesis. As my diet improved, my nails came along for the ride.

Any yes, if you're going to see much benefit, you're going to have to find a way to take supplements regularly. I find laying them out in film cannisters so I only have to open one container a meal is easier than thinking I'll open individual bottles every time a pill is due.

I would also choose a multi WITHOUT Iron unless you've been diagnosed anemic. If you're eating low carb, chances are that you're getting enough-and storing enough-iron. There was a good chapter on Iron in the Eades' book
'Protein Power LifePlan'.
