Default Dr Asseem Malhotra slams the NHS for serving 'ultra-processed junk' food

Harley Street consultant slams the NHS for serving 'ultra-processed junk' food after his father was given 'disgraceful' egg mayonnaise sandwich following a major operation

  • Top consultant Dr Aseem Malhotra shamed the NHS this week
  • He shared a picture of an egg mayonnaise sandwich served to his father online
  • Dr Malhotra called the 'disgraceful' snack 'ultra-processed junk' food
  • He railed against the medical system, saying 'to fix health we need to fix food'

A Harley Street consultant has slammed the NHS for serving his father 'ultra-processed junk' food after a major operation on his sinuses.

Dr Aseem Malhotra, a consultant cardiologist at ROC Private Clinic in Marylebone, London, raged about a local hospital which provided his father Dr Kailash Chand with a 'disgraceful' egg mayonnaise sandwich after surgery on Monday.

The outraged Edinburgh University-educated Dr Malhotra, best-selling author of The Pioppi Diet, shared a picture of the sandwich on Facebook this week.

It depicts an egg mayonnaise sandwich on white bread wrapped in plastic film, with a Vitale sticker printed on the packaging's top left corner.

In the top right corner, it states that the sandwich, sliced neatly into quarters, contains 19.5g of fat, 3g of saturated fat, 3g of sugar, and 1g of salt.

Its use-by date appears to be February 17, the same day as Dr Chand's operation.

On Facebook, Dr Malhotra thundered: 'My dad's just had a major operation (all ok) and this is the food he has been given to eat after regaining consciousness.

'Why are patients still being served such disgraceful ultra-processed "food"??'

He then appeared to direct his ire at the NHS, saying: 'When will the medical system acknowledge that nutritious food is essential to good recovery!!'

Later taking to Twitter, Dr Malhotra posted: 'Ultra-processed junk that my dad was given in hospital ward post op. Why are patients still served such disgraceful meals when nutritious food is essential to good recovery?

'If we really want to fix healthcare we need to fix the food ~MattHancock'.

Dr Jagan John, a cardiologist, tweeted: 'I agree with you Dr Malhotra - we should have a national patient charter for food quality in hospitals.

'When patients are in their most vulnerable state we should encourage -good quality food as it aids their recovery.

'And reduces bed days -many of my patients don't eat in the hospital'.

Other social-media users flocked to Dr Malhotra's post, with one claiming: 'It's all about money. Nutrition doesn't come into it.

'And let's remember that a significant part of the population would think this was nutritious because it's the same crap as they'd eat at home'.

Another posted: 'It's more beige than a beige dead thing'.

One Twitter account lamented: 'Because it's cheap and the NHS can feed more patients with this rubbish sadly'.

~NorthForBritain wrote: 'Bread has barely any nutrition other than calories.

It has to have vitamins added to it because it's so poor nutritionally.

'Stay away from bread if you're trying to recover'.

Dr Malhotra's father is an honorary vice president of the British Medical Association and is the ex-chair of Tameside and Glossop NHS.

Dr Chand, an honorary vice-president of the British Medical Association, responded to his son's post but chose not to join in the condemnation.

He wrote: 'I am deeply grateful for the exceptional care I received from colleagues and NHS staff for my sinuses operation. This is the NHS at its best.'

This was a very good read, I am not sure what the hell a egg mayonnaise sandwich is or why anyone would think that taste good. I mean they could have just given him eggs. that would have been good . They hit it on the head. Stay away from bread!

When I had my transplant, they were telling me I could go back to eating normal AKA fries and cheese burgers, cookies, enjoy life. With in moderation of course. Thank god I took things into my own hands and went KETO, LCHF, and fasting.

They say nothing to me when I tell them what I am doing, WHY? Cause all my 50 plus Labs that are drawn are PERFECT on LCHF with mild walking. You would think a Top 5 transplant center would guide me to sad but they tell me to keep things up.

I even go to the heart transplant gatherings ato see people and the food they serve is so bad. Pastas, Breads, Cakes, fried foods, and so on each time. I went to one place and there was food that I was not going to touch on my LCHF fasting lifestyle. they asked me if I had to eat special, I was quick and told the kitchen yes. They grilled me 2 nice juicy chicken breast with slat and pepper and I had green beans. Some time you have to lie lol .

I remember getting served all white items for my first meal after a very dangerous emergency surgery. I did not eat it. This meal was a 180 from the meals served prior to the surgery.

At a top US hospital 15 yrs ago.

Bravo! Thanks for sharing your story. Given your positive recovery, they weren't going out on a limb to change what you're doing given your results. Safe to say, they would have been speechless if they knew how you were eating. At the same time given your experiences at transplant gatherings, it's incredibly frustrating that healthy recovery after such a major procedure is compromised by such a potentially damaging selection of foods. It's not surprising that this is the case. Physicians plan and perform the procedure, the post-op support groups are influenced by the status quo, which is primarily our typical SAD approach with healthy vegetable infused pasta and desserts that provide a "nice balance." Sorry, but what BS. That certainly wouldn't work for me either.

Funny Story I will tell is this.

I was about a month post transplant, still in the hospital. And Dr S 9I will not say his real name) came by my room and kept checking on me. I was they guy he told I needed to lose the weight to get on the list.

So I did. So when he came to check on me he said:

"I herd you had fries today?

I didn't even know how he knew. I liked him cause he was a no candy coating Dr. he told me:

"why would you want to destroy the gift you received I just implanted in you with that junk you ate"

I was stunned and listened. He then looked at my lunch tray and saw 6 cookies they gave me. Dr said:

"you didn't really want these cookies, while throwing them in the trash"

This Heart doc really put the truth in my head, and I thank him for that. He did end up leaving cause of his bed side manner aka the real truth. Do not be sad for him he was making way over a million or more. Has is own setup in Florida.

We need more like him.

I have had " friends" like this. Abrassive but full on truth. Could trust they would be honest and forthright. Easier than second guessing sugar coated fluff.

Well actually not the worst thing he could have been given! Eggs are great after all. The mayo is not the best choice but not the worst either. If I'd been served this I would have just scraped the egg salad off the bread and eaten that!

I like straight shooters, it was how I chose my cardiologist after an emergency landed me in the hospital with aflutter that didn't respond to medication. I never regretted the decision.

Straight shooters are great as long as the bullets they are shooting actually hit the mark. I have certainly encountered doctors who tried to scare me straight with dangerous nonsense. All such bullets demand forensic evaluation in order to determine the value of the evidence they present. Doctors sometimes know best and are sometimes are entirely off the mark.

I took that the above logic would be understood
