For me it was a number of things:
Not being able to find ready-made clothes in my size and having to tailor all my clothes! (I wasn't really that big -- "only" about 200 lbs, but in India they assume that if you're bigger than a size 12 you don't need readymade clothes). I hadn't worn a pair of jeans in years!
Having a boy whom I thought was interesting tell a friend of his while chatting that he wasn't interested in me because I was "mota" -- that's fat in Bengali. I guess he thought I couldn't understand it but, well, I did.
Realizing that with one parent and 2 grandparents diabetic I've got an incredible risk of contracting the disease myself.
Seeing that picture of myself I've posted as a before photo. Cannot imagine I let myself get that huge.

Apart from that, well I guess I've been lucky. No one has ever directly insulted me about my weight. People have been concerned but have always broached the topic gently and sensitively.

Default pictures say a 1000 words...

my kick start was looking at our vacation photos two days after we returned. yikes! Of course it does not help that my photo is being taken next to a relative who does competitive cycling, but still....While on vacation we visited my Aunt who made one of those honest but insensitive comments, "Are you pregnant or just getting fat?" It took the photos to make me realize what she was talking about.

My first post might as well go here.

Numerous things really, but here's a basic summary:

- Me looking horrible in photos (I'm not photogenic to begin with).

- No clothes that fit properly. Never been this big before.

- I checked out the BMI charts and realised that I'm 'obese'. Great (although what's more worrying is that people would see me as 'average' if I just passed by - I think that's worrying from a societal norm point of view).

I love to wear jeans and 2 years ago i went from wearing 14's to 16's and now 16W. Then my 16W began to pinch at my waist and i can't stay long in them bcos they feel so tight.

My 5 year old thinks my tummy is HUGE! I have to set a good example for her.

I just really got tired of not been able to run up the stairs at home and been out of breath.

Default my jeans ripped

I squeezed into jeans that later that night (while on the town with friends/co-workers) burst from the crotch all the way up one side of my butt.

You are already very beautiful in your "before", honestly. But for health reasons, way to go with the weight loss!

I started gaining weight (and fast) a year and a half ago. I went to my doctor and he said all of my tests were fine. The weight continued to pile on and I stopped weighing myself when I reached 145 pounds. I went back to my doctor a few months later and the nurse weighed me and I was a whopping 187 pounds (with clothes and shoes). I gasped and said "that cannot be right". The nurse replied, yes, that is how big you are!!! I then decided to see a specialist (endochronologist) to discover I have hypothyroidism and this is why the weight came on and fast (I weighed 125 pounds my entire adult life). Coupled with the medication, I started Atkins and will never go back. Anyway, that is my story...

I know what you mean. When things get out of my control I tend to stick to my program (rather than binge) because food is one thing I *can* control.

Mine was of course vacation pictures on the beach - WOW how could I have not known?? And then my very tight size 16 jeans and having to lay down to zip them up and then struggling to stand and realizing that I do have the "muffin top" problem and feeling ashamed that I actually know what that means and that there is a term for it!!!!

NO MORE

Lets see... mine was during my infertility treatment, 2x actually. I was on about 6 injections a day, 2-3 pills a day, and daily sonograms. I gained a lot of weight when I went into hyperstim and my body swelled to look literally 8 months pregnant. Not to mention the meds made me hungry 24-7. I still get comments from colleagues outside of my section asking how my new baby is. Anyway, my kidneys couldn't take much more; and $30K of 2 failed IVF attempts I had to do something. My khakis looked like spandex. That was it!

I always depended on FINALLY getting pregnant to avoid diets. I was going to get bigger before I had to worry about diets, right? Countless months went by and the weight creeped up. Then the meds put things into overdrive.

My last failed IVF was February. I started to eat better. I was so insecure and my husband got me a boob job for my birthday in June. He's an A man, not a T man, so don't assume it was for him! After starting to feel sexy again, I took low carbing more seriously. When the pounds started to melt away, I started yoga to tone and voila! I went from a size 14 to a 4 in a total of 9 months.

Of course, I have another 5 lbs to go toward my goal. I can't fit any of my clothes (like potato sacks) but I don't want to buy anything else until I'm done. No complaints about that!
