Haven't listened to this yet. I wonder if we have any active Neanderthinners left on the board?

listened to it the other day. i thought it was really interesting especially the bits about toxoplasmosis causing so many mental health issues (that fell into the 'you learn something new every day' category for me)

I'm not an active Neanderthinner and never truly was (I still like my dairy) but was close to a "fellow traveller" at times. I followed the alt.support.diet paleolithic usenet board back in the days when Ray himself participated pretty often, and was one of those who wrote favorable Amazon reviews of his original self-published "Neanderthin", Ray said those reviews helped him get his book contract for the new edition with a big publisher. I still have his original book kicking around somewhere.

I've haven't listened to the interview though. I confess I hate *listening* to or viewing interviews. I want to READ them - so I constantly stall and put off listening to things that might be of interest.

Thanks for pointing me to this, teaser. I rarely think of going to Jimmy Moore's site. I should do it more often; he's really improved over the years, despite the junk food ads.

I wondered what happened to Ray Audette. That book was excellent. It's short, simple and spot-on.

As for toxomplasmosis, I began to worry about it several years ago after an article in a magazine (I think it was this one in The Atlantic) but I didn't know that it could be treated with a ketogenic diet.

Ray fans: he's on FB a great deal, and is quite approachable. A bit blunt perhaps :-)

I prefer reading to listening to podcasts, but this one wasn't too bad, Debbie. You can skip the intro ads and get to Ray talking at 1:57.

I first read Neanderthin in ~1999 after reading Protein Power and tried various LC diets over the years, but what works best for me is Ray Audette's prescription: no grains, no dairy, no sugar, no legumes, no potatoes.

I hadn't heard about toxoplasmosis causing mental problems, but take issue with blaming it all on house cats. Although people can be infected through contact with cat feces, the far more common way for someone to have contact with the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis is through unhygienic handling of raw or undercooked meat, drinking contaminated water and exposure to garden soil or sandboxes where infected cats may have defecated. People do not get the disease through direct contact with the cat itself.

Another interesting point he made during the interview was that cooking carbs at high temperatures greatly increases their (carcinogenic) acrylamide level. A slice of white bread has 300, a slice of healthywholegrain bread has >400 (not sure of the units; with more crunchy carbs having more acrylamide), yet a cigarette has 1.6.

Just read the book for the first time this week -- great stuff! Well-researched, presented simply, and straightforward to implement.
Amazing how ahead of it's time the book was.
