Personally, counseling never helped me. I wasn't going to listen to anyone who said I needed to lose weight because I wasn't ready to. Just my experience.

Yes, I understand exactly what you're saying about counseling. That's why I mentioned that this is a family issue and its not about one person's being overweight. But its how they respond to her about it and how she feels about that.

My own mother was overweight and tormented me about my weight when I was a teen and weighed what I weigh today. I was sent to diet doctors, given diet pills and drops and made to feel like a sack of shit. So yeah, I know how this feels in a very personal way.

I don't know if this would help or if it's even a possibility finance wise, but I read about this woman whose husband was willing to pay a certain amount of money for every pound his wife lost (I think it was $5 a pound). He put that money aside until his wife reached her goal weight, got rid of all her old "fat" clothes, and then gave the monty to her for a new wardrobe. If my dad gave that option to me in high school I would've totally been on board haha.

You had it right the first time you posted that it has to come from her. Bribing to lose weight is just wrong.

I'm willing to bet the problem is NOT that she doesn't want to lose weight or that she doesn't know what to do.

It's that she knows what she has to do, and she's still wrestling with the thought of "eating like a freak" for the rest of her life.

Remember her age. And remember what we adults went through!

Once again, WereBear hits the nail squarely on the head. Teenagers want to "fit in", to do what their friends are, to know they are part of their generation. They do not want to do what their parents do. At least, not yet.

I too think she will come around when she is mentally and emotionally ready for it. Till then, just assure her that you love her no matter her size. And be ready to help her when she is ready.
