i had jumped on the low carb bandwagon in january, however i do like the look of montignac. if low carbers preach that LC is how 2 lose weight than does montignac really work coz it doesn't seem all that low carb 2 me. i love the idea of being able 2 eat lentils and pearl barley coz thay are so filling and yummy. thanx, i'm verey confused.

Default It's not as low carb as Atkins

Montignac is not that low carb, but is more low carb than a "normal" diet. Montignac focuses more on low GI food but also talks about "protein meals" (as the egg&bacon breakfast). I have ordered (but not received) Atkins for Life, and from my impression his maintenance diet is very much low GI. I think it's really healthy food.

I think that Montignac/Somersizing and other low GI diets are for slower weight loss than a jump start on Aktins. OTH - you get your daily menu correct form the start and can maintain almost the same diet for the rest of the life. With a real low carb diet (like Atkins) I think lots of us slowly convert towards another diet - and it can be hard starting to eat low fat cheese once you have gotten used to those really fat and creamy things (for example).

Montignac is less about a blanket statement of Low Carb is bad. It is more about pick which carbs are ok, and which you should avoid.

It is very similar to the zone, sommersizing etc etc, as these plans were pretty much based on Montignac.

koko posted a good summary of the plan on this forum, in addition, check out this website for more information on the Glycemic Index and Gylcemic Load principles - the foundation of all these plans.

The emphasis in Montignac is not to put the body in ketosis, like Atkins etc, as this isn't good for the long term in their opinion. I don't want to get into a huge debate about whether ketosis is good or not.

I would check out Montiganc's books, ot the New Glucose Revolution - which is easier to understand in my opinion to Montiganc's books.

Hope this helps.

loopygem, you wrote: "than does montignac really work".

I still don't know how I lost 5 lbs in less than 4 weeks. With Montignac, I eat a lot like I used to, and I feel I eat as much or more. I only made a few adjustments to follow the rules (not always clear) of the Montignac method, and it works fine for me.

Hi LoopyGem

I think that a couple of reasons why Montignac works aside from the control of blood sugar are

no.1 as you said the food is very filling and satisfying - at the end of the day if you total your calories you will often be surprised at how little you have eaten in comparison to how full you feel.

no.2 the high fibre in the diet gives it a caloric advantage because when a diet is very high in fibre a certain amount of the food passes through the system undigested. Similar to the way that you figure the ECC in atkins.

no.3 The body has to work harder to digest these unrefined carbs so another few cals are burned that way.

Yes, it is not so much a low carb diet - I think of it as a CONTROLLED CARB diet.
