It's the money mentality of the manufacturers. Real stock without enhancers would cost more money to make and thus have a higher price tag and thus reduce profit. Chicken stock can be made a lot cheaper if you use MSG which makes food taste good. People are aware of MSG and its affects so...find another name!!! There are tons of names out there for MSG.
I would advise investing in a deep freeze and making your own stocks. I do. They are much less expensive than the canned variety to make and you can control the ingredients. A deep freeze is a boon..even a small one.
