Question Adding fiber to Protein Shake

Hi All!!
I use the vanilla whey protein from Costco and lately I've been adding my orange SF Metamucil to it to make a creamsicle shake. My question is, will the added fiber inhibit the protein, and fat from the cream, from metabolizing in any way? I've been a lookin' but can't find any answers.....Any thoughts on this??

Hi,

Doreen T has said a few times that fiber interferes with the absorbtion of supplements. One of those posts is here:

http://forum.lowcarber.org/showthre...highlight=fiber

Are you really worried about not getting enough protein or cream on a low carb diet? I avoid taking fiber with the expensive supplements, but gosh, I can't imagine that anyone here is protein-deprived.

Thanks for the link. I was aware of the supplimentation issue but I was curious at the speed of delivery/amount of nutrients that were being effected. I guess it makes sense that I should not add fiber to the protein shake if it will mean that I will shortchange myself on the actual food value.

I'm not worried about getting enough protein/fat, I would just like to know that I am getting what I require on a daily basis for tracking purposes. If it's not being used, why waste it!!
Thanks Again!!

Fiber can inhibit the absorption of iron, calcium and zinc (but, if you do some research, you'll find a lot of things do ). Fiber will slow down the absorption of the protein (which is usually a good thing), but you will still get all of the protein's nutrients. You may want to consider adding your flax oil to the shake too to keep you fuller longer.

Whey protein is a great source of protein. Keep doing what you're doing.

I add ground flax to my shakes. It tastes a whole lot better than the oil.

That's great to know!! Thanks for the clarification. I am actually using hemp oil at the moment in the shakes but I will try the flax again soon. (I got a funky bottle last time and it really turned me off!!)

That sounds like a great idea! I'm off to look up the fiber value for flax seeds.
Thanx!!

You can buy ground flax at most bulk stores for dirt cheap. Flax seed oil does have a funky taste but I use it as well; I take two tsp's right before bed. Yuck!

I was told that flax oil should have a nice nutty taste. I figured the bottle I bought was "off" so I ended up putting it in the dogs food. Nice shiny coats for them, anyway!!

I have tried several brands of flax seed oil, and they all have had a fairly nasty taste. And yes I to have a nice and shiny coat

Yes, I will admit, flax oil is an acquired taste. Some brands better than others. I have found Barleans the best tasting and don't even notice it in things anymore.

The reason I suggested adding it to your shake was to help keep you fuller longer (don't know if that is even an issue for you), along with getting the benefits of the oil. Ground flax seed is fine, and you will get the fiber benefit, but very little else. Also, flax seed once ground or pressed (ie;oil) is not stable and oxidizes quickly. If you're going to use ground flax, it's best to buy the whole seeds and grind them yourself (small amounts at a time). A mini coffee grinder works great.

I take flax oil capsules and I don`t taste anything!!

Also, in terms of adding fiber to your protien shakes, I would try Benefiber instead of metamucil. It`s flavorless, and it doesn`t get chunky if you let it sit for a few.

My current breakfast shake recipe: ( I take the flax capsules with it)
1 scoop Beverly Nutrition 100% Egg Protien Powder (no flavor)
2 ice cubes made from double brewed coffee
1 Tbsp Benefiber
1 cup Hood L/C Chocolate Milk.

Blend for 20 seconds on medium and enjoy!
