I wonder if a Brownie would have the same effect? Should I try one to see if I get hand cramps?

I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm thinking in terms of my own personal reaction to sugars and starches - I would be concerned with such a treat sparking the spiral back to obsessive sugar and starch consumption.

You can certainly test a brownie if you're ok dealing with any potential consequences.

I get my chocolate fix from unsweetened cocoa powder, some vanilla extract, and stevia mixed into plain greek yogurt, or from unsweetened baking chocolate, or the occasional homemade LC chocolate mug cake.

It wasn't a chocolate fix - it was my birthday cake!

I don't usually eat chocolate of any kind

Happy belated birthday!

I'm glad it didn't cause hand cramps - not something anyone wants to deal with on their birthday!

I honestly wasn't thinking that the chocolate cake was supposed to be a chocolate fix. It was only when you asked if you should try a brownie that I thought you might be craving chocolate, so offered some safer options.

Well, I followed up on your hypothesis that it is the chocolate that prevents the hand cramps following a high sugar content desert.

So today I had a brownie.

Sure enough - no hand cramps.

Interesting hypothesis that needs no further testing.

I hope I get that same cake recipe next year for my birthday. Yum!

Since I have no chocolate in my home, have no intention of buying any, eating more chocolate is not an issue.

Op, your post title had me waving my hand around going 'me, me, me!'

I've been working on weight management for around 8yrs now, and while most of that time has been in maintenance, I've tried just about everything along the way. I have come to realize though that managing carbs in some form is what works best for me, to make things bearable. I had a few years of focusing on calories/using a food scale to measure out everything etc and while I saw the results I wanted, it was a miserable experience.

With low carb I don't have to put a lot of effort into it, which makes me more likely to do it
