Default "Do I Look Fat In This"

I just got the new book DO I LOOK FAT IN THIS by Jessica Weiner, and it is really good. It has body image quizzes and all sorts of interesting tidbits that really make you think about yourself. I know it made me think.

What goes through our heads when we ask taht question? What are we really thinking.

FOr me, I know that my weight has gone up because I have been having difficulties with my roommate and am in the process of evicting her because she actually tried to physically hurt me. Therefore I have to stay away from my apartment and commute from the suburbs to school every day. Things are hitting a crescendo at the moment, and I wonder if that is why I'm stuck in this vicious gaining cycle.

I have huge body image issues. I should check this out. It sucks when you think you are the fattest or the ugliest in the room.

I love the idea of this book. I know when I ask the question, I am feeling my most insecure and want someone to reassure me that I look good even if I don't feel good. Doesn't help - because the mirror doesn't lie.

I'm going to check out the book too.

the book is fantastic and jessica weiner is such a dynamic writer that i want to be friends with her. i read a good part of it on the train this morning and there is this one discussion of little girls like 8 years old standing int he mirror sucking their tummies in. it was at that moment taht jessica remembers feeling body conscious for the first time, that weight mattered.
i remember when i noticed that- when i was 8 years old! staring in a mirror in dance class. i was a very good dancer and was younger than most of the girls in my class, but that meant i had that flat chest that came with a belly (i was a skinny little thing), but i definitely recall sucking it in at that time.

for me, the "language of fat" is a language of lonliness. i am pretty lonely, isolated in my thoughts, etc. i think this book helped me realize that.

if you guys read, we should start a thread where we discuss.

Hmm,
Does she also address those who have 'opposite' body images? I have a SIL that sees herself *thin* (they way she USED to be) instead of what she is now. I know that it may sound like a good problem to have, except that clothing that looks good on thin individuals tends to accentuate the fact that you
"not thin" on heavier people. I was just wondering if this was in the book? (My SIL says it drives her crazy!)

It just generally talks about how we lose ourselves by defining ourselves by how much we weigh, and stalling our lives, saying they will begin 5 lbs from now instead of actually just LIVING!

I finished it yesterda (while at the gym :-)) and it definitely it making me want to start treating myself differently. I think women who see themselves as thinner than they are have the problem of not wanting to be healthy- Weiner concedes this point- but she wants to extirpate the language of "fat/thin" from those girls vocabularies as well.
