Low-carb GP reaches final of nationwide awards programme

A doctor from Southport, known as the Low-Carb GP, was a finalist in a nationwide healthcare awards programme for his pioneering sugar infographics.

Dr David Unwin reached the last stages of the 2019 NICE Shared Learning Award for his work that involved displaying the sugar content in popular food groups. The infographics have also been deemed as suitable educational material for adults with type 2 diabetes.

There were 68 entries from organisations across the NHS, local authorities, social care, and the voluntary and private sectors and organisers said this year the “standard was extremely high”.

Dr Unwin and the other finalists were asked to present their work on the eve of this year’s NICE Conference in Manchester and attending delegates voted for the winner.

The NICE Shared Learning Awards recognise and reward examples of how NICE guidance and standards have been put into practice. They recognise and celebrate the organisations that have created innovative and effective ways of using NICE guidance and quality standards in practice.

As well as showcasing the finalists’ work, the NICE Annual Conference also featured a poster display of 17 additional Highly Commended projects from across the UK, of which Dr Unwin’s was also included in.
