Last time I went to the doc for a renewal of a med she asked me if I wanted my cholesterol tested - then she said "I suppose you wouldn't take statins even if you tested high, eh? I said NO. So that was the end of that.

Statins are a case of "we can do it, so let's do it to everyone." Follow the money.

That's what I have told my doctor. I wouldn't take statins no matter what the blood test showed so I don't get tested. I haven't probably for 2 decades.

I do get the cholesterol/lipid tests at my physicals to monitor parameters of interest to me but never with the idea to "see if I need a statin." The entire "bad" cholesterol theory behind why statins are offered is flawed.

About three years ago, I ended up with a new doc when my old doc retired. The new guy soon got used to the fact that my cholesterol profile is skewed from the standard range. Although I still note the routine tests, he doesn’t bring it up anymore at check-ups. In the beginning, I think he had to recommend statin therapy as one of the “standards of care” or something like that, by which his performance as a physician is measured. Now I suspect he just checks off a box: Patient refused.

I do get my cholesterol tested as it’s one of the good indicators of my thyroid status. It was pretty high a couple months ago but my thyroid had gotten all out of whack too, so trying to address that. My doctor merely said “I don’t suppose you’d want to take a statin, would you?” And of course I said no!

I get the standard tests along with an annual physical, but I wouldn't ever take statins. Maybe under extreme circumstances, but given my history, I doubt that's ever likely to be the case. (My numbers have been roughly the same for a couple of decades with total sitting somewhere around 220, LDL high and ratios excellent.)

Once, my old doc a couple of decades ago hinted that it might be a tad high, but never suggested meds. Then over the next couple of years, she said it was fine. I think she was just staying up to date on new research and realized my numbers were good. Ever since, I get the same report: Your total is a little bit higher than the standard (or even "a little outside the average" ), but all of your other numbers are excellent, so there's nothing to be concerned about. Basically, it's the way they're acknowledging the standard of care to CYA and moving on.

I think if I ever had a doc say anything other than this, it would be a huge red flag to me that they're not up-to-date on research and I need a better doctor.
