I started reading this. Since I have had diabetes since 2008, most of what I'm reading so far I already heard before, but this would be great for someone just being diagnosed. The truth is so different from what the ADA teaches.

I'm so glad I'm able to get back into this post to edit. Boy, way I wrong! The chapter by Dr Fung was mostly what he had written about Diabetes in IDM, expanding a little more on it. But Chapter 4, by Dr Robert Cywes, who I have never heard of, was such an eye opener! This is where they get that it's not sugar coated. He just tells it like it is, and explain Diabetes in a way I've never heard before. Every type 2 Diabetic should read this!

I am only 22% into the book so far. This is the best book about Diabetes that I have ever read!

Reading on, there is a very good section on Type 1 diabetes and how it can be well controlled with a low carb diet. You still have to inject insulin, but much less than when eating carbs. It was mostly about a man who was a marathon runner. By trial and error, he figured out how to eat low carb and not carb load for the race, and just the right amount of insulin to inject to get him through the race without a hypo or a severe spike. Exercise can be very tricky with diabetes.

The chapter I just finished was about how nutritionists and other medical personnel just HAVE to support the pharmaceutical community, and also the food giants. Even after they saw proof that low carb could help diabetics, they continue to insist that people take their meds and "balance out their carbs" to go along with them.

I am a little more than half way through.

I am now reading Diabetes Unpacked for the second time. I just noticed, in chapter 6, written by Lars-Erik Litsfieldt, he writes of his own diagnosis with Type 2 diabetes. He states

I was placed on sulfonylurea medication (Metformin.) And that his doctor said it would make sure that his pancreas would give off sufficient quantities of insulin. (paraphrasing.)

This is incorrect. Metformin is not a sulfonylurea medication, nor do they act in a similar way. Metformin has nothing to do with the release of insulin, nor can it cause a hypo, the way a suIfonylurea medication can. I know that he is Scandinavian, and possible something got translated wrong when the book was written, but this could be very misleading to a newly diagnosed diabetic who didn't know better.

For a related podcast, the 2 Keto Dudes had Prof. Noakes this week. Great Interview!
He too is involved with the Virta Research, designed to show Diabetes can be reversed by Diet alone. This is the third time I’ve heard hints that their results have been excellent, will change diabetes treatment, but the paper is still in Review for publication. Way past the one year mark now, but have hope this will truly start a paradigm shift in treatment approach.

She said that results from “usual” treatment for both type 1 and 2 diabetes are “poor”.

Morrison is co-author of the book, Diabetes Diet: For Weight Loss and Incredible Blood Sugar Control. She is also co-author of papers on low-carb diets for metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Morrison said that doctors and dietitians who don’t use ketogenic diets for treatment of diabetes have an unreasonable fear of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is a rare, potentially fatal condition seen mostly in type 1 diabetics.

“Ketogenic diets do not cause ketoacidosis,” Morrison said.

Dietary ketosis is a perfectly normal phenomenon, she said. It occurs when there is a relative lack of dietary carbohydrate. The body uses up body fat for fuel and a side effect is the “spilling of ketones” – a by-product of fat metabolism– into the bloodstream, breath and urine.

The amounts of ketones are “small and not dangerous”, she said.

She called it “crazy” to recommend a high-carb diet for diabetics, both type 1 and 2. (Doctors advised her to put her son on a high-carb diet when he was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.)

Morrison pointed out that even NICE (UK National Institute for Clinical Excellence) diet criteria now support low-carb diets.

Good, solid article covering and summarizing the PHC conference. It's encouraging to see physicians walking the walk by adhering to a LCHF WOE, realizing improvements, and then helping their patients do the same. As the word gets out and more follow the LCHF and its complements such as keto, Paleo (Whole 30), etc., the ground swell will increase at the grass roots level with credible experts now practicing a healthy approach. I'm sensing a change despite the unchanging positions of Pharma, much of the medical community (ADA, AHA), and the food manufacturers. Eventually, it will pass them by, and we'll start to see changes occurring in the dietary guidelines in each country as they gradually move toward the LCHF approach. It's started already, but there will be no "flash cut," as I believe businesses must be protected and potential liabilities must be managed by the slow roll towards nutritional sanity.

Many years ago when I first started following Dr Bernstein's 6-12-12 way of eating Dr Katherine Morrison was a member of the Dr Bernstein forum on his website (he does not participate directly on the forum). She was just discovering the diet for her young son, learning as she went. It is nice to see that she has stuck at it and has become an advocate for this way of eating.
