Default Question about Cholesterol numbers

Hi there. I have been on Atkins for 4 months now and have lost 42lbs. I did not have any blood work done prior so I dont know what my levels were then but I just had blood work done and my Dr. says not to worry but when he sent me the test results, the lab people had my numbers listed in the "Abnormnal Column" which scared my a little. Here's my numbers:
Total Cholesterol - 201
Triglycerides - 249
HDL - 39
VLDL - 49
LDL - 112
Total Chol/HDL Ratio - 5.1
So what does all this mean ?
Im confused !!

hi there,

I posted "what the numbers mean" for another member ... you can check it out here. I didn't include an explanation about VLDL, but you can read more about it in this Discovery Health article.

hope this is helpful to you

Craig, have a look through this thread:

Cholesterol newbie

Doreen breaks down the desirable range for all the variables in the second post and provides some information from the Eades about ratios and lowering LDL and raising HDL.

Your total number looks good
Your ratio of 5.1 is just above desireable (as in JUST above)
Your HDL is one point below desirable
your LDL is great!

Because you didnt have a baseline to compare these results to progress can't be guaged at this point - Do you plan to have more tests done in a few months?

Overall, you look good on the inside and the outside, IMHO.
Nat
