I supplement iodine. I swear by it. Every time I try to cut back I get a swollen thyroid that makes swallowing difficult and I also get itchy toes for some reason. When I have a cold or feel one coming on, I take an extra pill.

I began taking iodine about 7 years ago when my hair began falling out. After researching things on Dr. Google, I prescribed myself iodine. At the time, I was eating eggs every day so I didn't bother with the selenium. Not only did my hair stop falling out, but I had more energy and my arthritic fingers began to feel better. Hmm. Maybe there was something to all this alternative medicine after all. Gradually, I began to treat other long-standing issues and deficiencies in my body.

Long story short, iodine eventually led me to low carb. Turns out I need a lot fewer supplements now that I'm not eating those healthy whole grains.

I'm so glad you posted about iodine, it's because of you I started taking it!
What amazed me was how it's been used for centuries and I guess like other nutritional supplements was knicked out of the market by the drug companies.

When I started I had chest congestion that I just couldn't cough out and the over the counter meds are all changed now since drug users began abusing them so the expectorant I had bought didn't work at all and in fact was making my lungs feel like a burning sensation.... Well, as soon as I started the Iodine I couldn't believe how fast it cleared up my lungs, it was truly miraculous!. The iodine book said that in France they have used Iodine for ever for breathing treatment in patients with lung illness, like phenomena...

Meme! I'm so glad iodine has worked for you too! It's amazing what a simple little pill can do. Now both my sisters have gnarly fingers from arthritis. Although I'm the youngest sister (by 17 months for one and just shy of 3 years for the other), I'm the one who had arthritis symptoms from an early age. They were blindsided by it. I guess I can't say with certainty it's the iodine that's stopped my fingers from being gnarly, but I believe in my heart of hearts that it is. Along with low carb, of course, but my sister who's 17 months older has been doing low carb for the last 2 years.

And you're giving me ideas. I know iodine nips my cold viruses in the bud, but I never thought about using it in any other way for respiratory ailments. I may try my youngest on iodine. He's got severe asthma. It'll have to wait for Christmas or summer break though as the transition could cause him sleeplessness or moodiness.

Tess, I cook with iodized salt. Salting the food of my teens to provide iodine. While my boys get sick time to time, neither misses a day of school.

I also hold to the benefits of a fever. The body is working properly to kill a microbe that the body views as problematic. Giving a fever reducer gets in the way of the body knocking down an infection.

(I didnt follow this when children were much younger, as I didnt know about the purpose of a fever.)

Me too! I only treat fevers when they're very high and I'm worried about the side effects. And I started doing that way back when my big kids were very young. And I don't exactly know why. More instinct than anything for me at that point.

My kids now blow thru the fever stage very fast. I suspect treatment to lower temps only prolongs the illness.

And yes, too high a fever is dangerous. 104-106 is dangerous.
