Re: Iodine. As I understand it, adding iodine to table salt was one of the earliest nutritional interventions on a big scale, probably when I was a tot. That's a long time ago. The marketing of "gourmet salt" might have reduced the use of ordinary iodized table salt to some detrimental effect.

FYI: This week I bought iodized Sea Salt at my ordinary grocery store. So if you choose to use this salt (I'm not sure what's so special about it except being chunkier) you can find an iodized version.

That's good to know. Currently I take kelp capsules as an iodine supplement given the lack of iodine in most forms other than table salt. I'll look for the iodized sea salt variety.

Barbara, I have not been able to find the iodized sea salt, that is why I use both.

When I looked into kelp and seaweed for iodine options, I learned that the seaweed is too contaminated with heavy metals. Perhaps the commercially prepared tables run tests for that, IDK. I didnt feel I could trust themeither way.

I can directly harvest seaweed and the last visit to the beach, a few different seaweeds were taste tested. Rather tasty to me. Which is why with a bit of sleuthing I found the above, as well as a man that harvests a few miles up the bay.

Brought me right back to iodized salt. One step better would be KI, potassium iodide salts. KI is also used to fertilize the soils depleted of potassium, just seems more effect to me to take the KI directly than hope farmers are improving their soils.

I like to add them to my bone broth.

Great idea, and they appear to be healthy and safe. Thanks!

The version in the back of Why We Get Fat is shorter, and with permission on DietDoctor, is almost the same as the longer version.

https://www.dietdoctor.com/se/wp-co...starch_diet.pdf

It works well for most, but limit on mayo, cream and a few other things is slightly higher. Not enough to make a difference for most.

Heal Clinic offers a new one page download, where they make clear that oils do have limits, e.g. no BPC with 500 calories. https://healclinics.com/dr-westman-page-4/

Ive been thinking about posting these at the library bulletin board.... along with all the other postings for events, support groups, etc. The one pager would be great for that.

Another one page version with more detail, and a very limited amount of berries allowed. Makes a good shopping list. https://caseydurango.com/keto-food-list

I'm reading this as I munch on an afternoon snack of unblanched whole almonds. Actually I prefer to think of it as "the rest of my lunch."

Anyway, on none of the one-page lists easy to access have I found nuts listed, either in the DO or the DON'T category. I know that calorie-wise, nuts are costly, and also they can cause over-indulgence for unrepentant snackers. So I looked up the stats on Fitday. Here's what I found:

1/4 cup unblanched whole almonds, 205 calories, 7 total carbs, 4.2 fiber, 7.5 protein. Not bad for carbs, and some nutritional value.

Probably this one is a personal call. But...nuts can be dangerous, right? Is this 205 additional calories (yes, they probably do count) worth it? Hmmmm. I shove the rest of the dish out of sight.

I avoid snacking on my nuts & seeds and only eat them after I measure out an ounce to add to my morning kefir. Just so happens I just added organic raw almonds to the mix. Just figured that it's cheaper for me to get a pound from nuts.com than a 12oz package from trader joes ($14.99 / lb compared to $11.99 / 12oz). My nuts.com monthly order always gets me free shipping.

Nuts are not allowed on the clinic program...they are "morish", not everyone can stop at one measured ounce, and they are calorie dense. If overeaten, too many carbs and too many calories. Favorite nuts like cashews are over 9 g per ounce, and when counting total carbs, blowing half your daily carb allowance on a few cashews doesn’t leave much room for good meat, eggs and veggies...even 7 g of almonds for a snack is a bit much when trying to stay to 20g total carbs.
