Default Are there atkins bake mix alternatives??

I'm sick of reading atkins recipes that require his bake mix. I'm not going to buy it for $17.00 CAD. So......does naybody have any suggestions of what to use in replace of it? I was thinking protein powder, but would love all of your suggestions. Thanks.

There are alternatives to using Atkins bake mix, but you would need some low carb cookbooks to know what to use and in what amounts. Things like vital wheat gluten, almond flour and protein powder can be used as well as unprocessed wheat bran and ground flax.
One cookbook that I've found that uses alternatives to baking mixes is The Low Carb Comfort Food Cookbook by the Eades'.
You can also check the recipe forum here to see how others are making baked goods without bake mixes.

Soy flour is good as well. You can substitute it into any recipe that calls for flour

Default You could make your own...

I got this off another board... a recipe to make your own Atkins Bake Mix

1 cup soy flour
2 cups soy protein isolate
2 tablespoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons Splenda

Sift together then store and use as you would Dr. Atkin's. It's much cheaper and things come out about the same.

3 carbs per 1/2 cup serving
Some people subed whey for soy.

I haven't tried this, so cannot tell you how it compares.

Back to say I didn't see Rosebud's post. LOL!

Rick I just have to tell you what an inspiration you and your precious wife are to me. I will be following your progress (you've got a fan club, baby)! LOL

I also use soy protein and soy flour, it is found in our local large-chain grocery store in the binned foods section.

Atkins mixes are too high in Washington too. Plus I despise it's taste. I would rather go eat 2 eggs with butter and cheese than swallow an Atkins' mix waffle from mix. Just my 2 cents!

Thumbs up

Thanks, Ellejaiem, for the recipe for baking mix alternative. I'll give it a try. So much cheaper than my 12.99 small box at Safeway! Yikes! Hugs, ~Annie-Pie~

AnniePie, $12.99? Yikes! That's robbery, the stuff costs about two bucks once you have the proper ingredients on hand. I bought a big tub of vanilla whey powder for $30.00, and with the other ingredients, it will make about 9 pounds of a faux Atkins mix to use for sweet things, as well as a bunch of the 'shakes' that I make. We use unflavored whey for savory baked goods as I can't stand the taste of soy flour. It works with a pinch more baking powder, and blended soy grits.

Thank God that there are so many creative people out there who have blazed a path for us so we don't have to eat a lot of expensive 'faux food'.
