Default Heme iron for Vegetarian

As you know heme iron is only found in meat, fish and poultry,
And it is well absorbed than Non-heme iron that is found in fruits, cereals and brown rice.

My problem is I have anemia and I cant digest meat easily because I used to eat a lot of bad fast food (mostly American fast food), I get enough iron when eating meat but still I get new problems because the fat in meat is killing me

When I don't eat meat, i become so tired because my body doesn't have enough iron and i feel good after eating meat, but meat has a lot of bad fat and i cant digest it easily, I am wondering how do vegetarian people get heme iron from. Since they never eat meat or chicken? And its only found in meat…

Will eating vitamin C is enough to absorb iron? Can I eat oranges and forget about meat? Or do I really have to eat meat?

Thanks.

Have your doctor measure your iron levels. If necessary, you can then take iron supplements.

Are you sure your anemia is due to lack of iron? Anemia can be due to lots of things. Make sure you are taking b12 with the iron.. b12 is needed for it to be absorbed.

Make sure you have to doc. check it out, your body could also be deficient in producing intrinsic factor.

If it is due to lack of iron, you can get enough iron through veggies! Although it is easier to get iron through supplement, i totally understand your opposition to taking pills, I hate taking supplements.

Research suggests that eating iron containing plant foods in a meal or snack with a food rich in vitamin C increases the amount of iron the body can absorb.
Some iron rich foods would be:
lentils cooked from dry:7mg per cup
Garbanzo beans: 5mg per cup
tomatos: 5mg per cup
turnups: 3mg per cup
NUTS!!! Nuts have TONS of iron
Cashew nuts per cup: 8.5mg

a lot of soy products also have iron in it.
Morning star veggie sausage, bocca burgers, etc
Egg beaters are also very low in fat and have some iron in it.

Hope that helps somewhat!

Try Floradix. It's the only food-based iron supplement. Totally vegetarian.
