Default Magnesium Questions

I know there are lots of threads around here about magnesium and how supplementing such can make you apparently feel "sparkly"

My question is: have you had your actual magnesium level tested? Do you supplement even if your mag levels are already normal?

I had labs run a few weeks ago, and my mag level came back as 2.2 (normal range identified as 1.5-2.5). Is there a benefit to adding mag supplements anyway (I was considering it due to my consistently slightly high blood pressure that hasn't budged despite having lost more than 120 pounds)? A quick Google tells me that magnesium toxicity is highly unlikely unless there are renal/kidney issues, but even if not toxic, would it simply be a waste if my body is just going to filter out the excess anyway?

Hi Jill,

I have not had magnesium tested. My understanding is that the usual test is not definitive. See these links:

Blood Serum Test Is Not An Accurate Measure of Magnesium Deficiency

http://blog.easy-immune-health.com/.../#axzz1TcUoQLqY

Hospital Laboratory Magnesium Testing Only Catches a Fraction of Magnesium Deficiencies

http://www.nutritionalmagnesium.org...-release-2.html

Both pages quote Carolyn Dean, an MD and naturopathic doc, who wrote "The Miracle of Magnesium", a quick and easy read.
Another good book on magnesium is The Magnesium Factor" by Mildred Seelig, M.D. which is heavier on the research. Both will likely leave you with the impression that you might want to try supplementing with magnesium.

A concise summary and recommendation for how much and what kind to supplement is here by a nutritionist:

http://www.krispin.com/magnes.html

Try it and see how you feel.

Great post, JL!!!

That's what I would have written, too, and I would have also linked to that Krispin page as well!!!

I'll give it a whirl - luckily, I have a home blood pressure cuff, so I'll see if it makes an impact to what I'm most hoping for.

Thanks!
