Hi Alane,
I do derby too! I was pretty worried about working out without carbs, but it's been fine.
1) I didn't do any heavy workouts during my first 3 weeks of induction. I wanted to give myself the time to adjust.
2) I eat a good size (250-350 cals) snack about 45 minutes prior to my heavy workouts. I've found that some salted nuts and a good chunk of cheese work well. (Fats, rather than carbs). I'm also careful to hydrate all day.
I've not had any problems, even on the day when I did two hours of derby and an hour of swimming right in a row.
So part of it might be adjusting, part might be finding the right pre-exercise snack, and part of it is going to be figuring out what works for your body.
Is it possible you need carbs before you work out? Possibly. But it's certainly not holy writ.
