Default Ketogenic diet to combat low platelets in cancer patients

High fat ketogenic diet envisioned as potential life-saving therapy to combat low platelets in cancer patients

Quote:
A high-fat diet may combat low platelet counts in the blood caused by chemotherapy, according to preliminary research, which suggests that a ketogenic eating plan may be a nontoxic, low-cost and high-benefit addition to cancer therapy.

Low platelets trigger a condition known as thrombocytopenia. Chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia is a severe complication in patients with cancer that can lead to an impaired therapeutic outcome and threaten survival. An estimated 1 in 10 patients receiving chemotherapy develops thrombocytopenia, according to the authors of a new analysis in Science Translational Medicine. (...)

What Xie and colleagues found bordered on the spectacular: They noticed that the diet caused a change in the bone marrow, which resulted in a boost of circulating platelets. If these findings in animal models and a tiny group of human volunteers hold up to further scrutiny, a ketogenic diet in the not-too-distant future could become a potential thrombocytopenia preventive for patients undergoing chemotherapy.

You wouldn't have to twist my arm too hard to get me to go strictly ketogenic if I was offered up a devastating cancer Dx.

A friend is currently going through chemo for pancreatic cancer. His first 2-week round was just before Christmas. It's a pill form of chemo and done at home. I would love to share this article with him and his wife but I've already mentioned to them the possible benefits of a keto lifestyle for physical mass cancer. Not as a cure but to assist.

Unfortunately, they do not seem inclined. And he is or has gone off the rails on food. He is not moderating his eating - if he wants it, he eats it. The sugarier and carrier, the better in his mind. His A1c is over 11, even with medication, and he'd rather go on insulin than modify his diet to low carb or keto. Even though they both felt wonderful the month or two they did Whole 30. He's been T2 for years and his sugars kept creeping up so he's thinking the cancer is the cause. IMO (non-medical of course), the cancer is contributing to it and he will likely end up T1 as well.

Makes me sad ...
