Default New Protein paper named a top five at Obesity Week.

A new study from Professors Raubenheimer and Simpson with their post doc, was selected a top paper of the many papers presented at Obesity Week. It is getting media coverage, including this article in Forbes magazine, picked up by Apple News.

How to implement Protein Leverage in your diet to avoid obesity and lose weight? See Dr Ted Naiman's The P:E Diet and Marty Kendall’s Optimising Nutrition threads. As of this past Sunday, it took 15 months for me to reach an ideal 22 BMI and one additional year easily maintaining that weight loss…at 71.

Protein Leveraging is extremely important for people to understand, as implementing a WOE with sufficient protein enables people to better control, reduce the other macros to achieve a healthy weight and overall health improvements. The days of diminishing the importance of healthy protein are over with the understanding of this concept. Thanks, J, further details of this concept of emphasizing protein enable many others to benefit, and it has made a huge difference for me over the past couple years.

Is there any risk to the kidneys with these high protein diets?

If your kidneys are healthy and normal-functioning, then no, there's no risk from eating a high protein diet. If you have pre-existing severe kidney disease, then it may be necessary to restrict protein intake.

Common concerns about high protein diets

With respect to kidney health and protein intake, it is well-recognized that people with severe chronic kidney disease should restrict protein intake. Dietary protein will not, however, cause kidney dysfunction in people with healthy kidneys.

(footnotes - One study reports no harmful effects to kidney and bone health after one year of eating a diet providing 3 grams of protein per kilo of body weight per day. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27807480/. And the following meta-analysis of nine RCTs and a large observational study both report that those who ate higher amounts of protein had a significantly reduced risk of developing kidney disease. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27346534)

Hope that's helpful

I just saw a paper about protein restricted diets being best for losing fat. Then it mentioned something about vegan and I dismissed it.

Dr. Ted Naiman has been asked about protein's impact on the kidneys in most every podcast interview. Here is one, his answer starts about minute 39, where he summarizes the concern as “mythical”. Another answer he has given is that in his 20 years of practice he has never seen someone with problems from eating “too much protein”, yet every day he sees older patients who suffer the consequences from not enough protein in their diet. https://susanbirch.co.nz/2020/06/12...-ted-naiman-md/

This article by Dr Naiman is a good starting point to learn about protein, and there are three good interviews with him on DietDoctor as well. https://www.dietdoctor.com/high-pro...at-more-protein

Marty Kendall has a few new articles about the practical application of the Protein leverage hypothesis in weight loss diets. https://optimisingnutrition.com/pro...rotein-too-high

People need more protein as they age since their digestion is not as efficient and their appetite is less.
