Default Pre-op carb loading in Alberta

I have received my pre-op patient instructions for knee surgery next week. The night before--within 8 hours of the surgical time, patient is to drink several (more than 8) ounces of either orange juice or cranberry juice. 4 hours before surgery eat bread/toast.

I asked if these same instructions applied to diabetics and was told they were not to drink the juices.

New pre-op protocols (I admit it has been 10 years since my last knee surgery). This time the patient runs all over town getting X-rays, blood tests, type and cross match, etc. Bring all meds to hospital as none will be provided. Bring all ambulatory aids as none will be provided. Then home in 3 days to self-care as there are no available rehab beds. Of course no driving for 6 weeks. For anyone living alone this can be a problem, especially on limited funds.

The new protocol on carb loading is disconcerting for a low carber.

Health care has changed. I wonder why I am surprised.
