Default Wisdom of Dr. Atkins

"The people in power have created an obesity epidemic."

Dr. Robert Atkins was so far ahead of his time in so many ways.

Thought we could have a thread for some of his memorable quotes.

"Food compulsion isn't a character disorder; it's a chemical disorder."

There's a quote from Oscar Wilde that I love to paraphrase: There is only one thing I cannot resist, and that is temptaion.

I have often skipped THanksgiving and CHristmas with the family---and I was happy to remove much excess weight because I kept to OP foods because I skipped the temptation.

So true about Dr. Atkins’ warnings- they would register, but I would still slip up. I don’t have the exact quote, but he said that if people start eating recklessly again after losing, their weight would return to the highest point or more, due to our disordered carbohydrate metabolism.

Love the Oscar Wilde quote. Family celebrations are the toughest times for me, I always make sure to bring low carb items, but that temptation is always there to indulge in the foods I know to be detrimental to me.

Here is the one you mention---

Quote:
Binges come in all shapes and sizes and can prove so disatrous that they can turn a seemlingly surfire weight loss sucess story into an instant failure. The weight gain is usually so profound it can be measured in pounds per day.

Despite my protest, and attempted bribe with Reese's peanut butter cups, my boss moved me from a high speed, high energy job to a stand still cubicle. Gained 20 pounds in 2 months. THOSE 20 are on my radar now! Hate that man!! Voodoo doll time.

Sometimes people with a fair degree of metabolic resistance find that to lose at a decent speed they have to exercise (which I urge you to do anyway). Then they tell me, "But back in 1994, I lost 20 pounds in 2 months without exercising." Get real. It's not 1994. Send all complaints to Father Time, Box Office Eternity.

He never sugar coated anything.

He did not sugar-coat anything!

I really like this quote. Notice he is not preaching or saying “Atkins will work for you!”, instead he humbly uses the term “if”. He was a great man.

He helped me understand the endless trips to the 'fridge was not a lack of self control; it was an internal drive. I could let go of the damaging guilt.

He continues,

I have heard many patients say , " It 's irresitible, Dr Atkins. I am a slave. How can you help me?"

I say, "That's allright. Your compulsions hold no terrors for me, and soon they won't for you.............If you eat the way I am asking you to eat, you will find that food is still delicious, but the compulsions will fade."

OMG! Atkins could tame the compulsion to EAT.

I hunted down a copy of DANDR in the summer of 2000 when a couple co-wworkers could not explain the diet. With an attitude of, "ya right another crappy diet" I carefully read thru the book and about half way thru, I was truely excited-- this man had it right!!!! FOr the first time in 20 years, I found a diet worth trying. AND IT WORKED.

'There is no room ever to be ashamed over your past actions. Just put the past away. All we can do is deal with the present...let the past be valuable to teach you what mental blocks are likely to hold you up so that you can profit from your mistakes."

Dr. Atkins recommended doing a few days on strictest level of diet after a slip up, but to have something especially luxurious, like a big bacon cheeseburger, bunless of course, or lobster with plenty of butter.
