Default Hello and Help

I so happy to find this forum for support. My first "issue"-- I have been living a low carb lifestyle for 20 years starting with Atkins. With the lockdown, I veered off course and gained about 10 pounds. 2 weeks ago I got back to under 25 carbs per day and have GAINED weight. This has never happened in the 20 years I've been doing this. Any ideas, advice?

20 years is a long time. The body changes. 20 years as well probably has you at a good homeostasis as far as weight goes.

Keep rocking what you are doing and wait on the weight

Hi and welcome.

I joined this forum 18 years ago, and BOY can I not get away with eating what I ate back then. "Loosely" is fine if your focus is getting away from the standard terrible Western diet, and if your goal is avoiding metabolic disease. It's probably not going to help you shed much extra fat, though, especially for us ladies. Sad but true. I've steadily gained through peri-menopause and it takes more effort just to avoid further gain.

I'd encourage you to start a journal, or at least give us an idea of what types of meals you're eating. It also might be a good idea to refresh your memory about the Atkins plan, and maybe go for strict induction rather than "loosely" Atkins. Here's the Induction Acceptable Foods List, if that's the plan you choose to follow.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

My diet is simple, fewer than 16k calories/day, fewer than 20 carbs/day, and twice as much fat as protein.

If I hit a stall, I will spend a few days, or however many it takes not eating anything after 8PM and again before 8AM the next day. It seems the semi-fast helps break the stall.

To quit eating, find something to do with your hands, and that doesn't mean working the TV remote

Eating for entertainment breaks boredom but in the long run can mean problems for many of us. I learned to play a couple of different musical instruments and that keeps me very busy (I haven't watched any TV since 1990).

Seems most people have put on a few pounds since the lockdown...... be patient with any change.

I cant drop pounds like I used to. Intermittent Fasting has helped.

Others have identified foods that their body struggles with. Dairy, the tomato family, or lectins like beans.

Vegetable oils are out, coconut oil, butter and lard are better.

As others have noted, age and weight loss can seem like oil and water. They don't really mix that well. I'm in maintenance, but it's a constant challenge. Because I'm 75 I have to keep my carbs quite low. Also, I keep my blood ketone levels high for therapeutic reasons. If I stay around 2.0mmol/L there is no joint inflammation. This means no aches and pains. Sometimes I get pain, but that usually means I need a chiropractic adjustment.

These are all such great replies...gives me much to consider and try. Thanks for the resources. I think you're right, Kristine, it's a good idea to revisit the induction information. Thanks so much!

I have found that with the past ten years, Atkins doesnt work the same for me. As I have gotten older, I have to watch calories as well as carbs and I have to choose whole unprocessed foods over any processed stuff or I will not lose. I also have to strictly adhere to my dairy limits (which are lower than the book advises). You may have to pay attention to more parts of the equation than you used to if you want to succeed. I used to eat between 1800 and 2300 cals a day on Atkins and lose fine. Now I have to keep it below 1600. Getting old stinks! LOL

We each have our issues and triggers for weight gain.

I can eat all the dairy I want, but I also have to keep the calories under 16k.

Getting old sure beats the alternative

Do not belittle the impact of STRESS. This affects cortisol and sleep, which in turn influences how our body's hormone systems react. Survival instincts sense trouble ahead, and at least my body concludes that famine might be an issue. Boom! Pants get tighter

Also, I was astonished by the foods I thought were "fine" and turn out to be highly problematic. It could be worth exploring an elimination diet of some kind, or at least drop the ones you are craving.

This can actually be a sign these are trouble foods.

I second werebear's comments on stress AND on trying an elimination diet. I was stuck for two years seesawing until I did an elimination diet and found a half a dozen "safe" foods that were stalling me and causing other problems. Once I eliminated those things from my diet my losses started coming along steady again and after a 2 year plateau I dropped another forty pounds. Had I not done the hard work of finding the trigger, I wouldeither still be seesawing at the same weight or would have given up and ballooned back up. If you have been stalled for more than a few months, elimination may be the way to go.

Amazing! I think this factor is not considered as much as it should be. Great stall-buster potential.
