Default How do you calculate total cholesterol?

This is bugging me. Here is my last three blood tests with what I think are great improvements but my total is almost the same.

Total - HDL - LDL - Trig - Risk
254 - 48 - 188 - 108 - 5.3
242 - 46 - 180 - 95 - 5.3
243 - 71 - 160 - 73 - 3.4

Just talked to Blue Cross all they wanted to know was what my total cholesterol number was. They rejected me! Something seems strange.

Default calculation of total cholesterol

total cholesterol=HDL + LDL +(triglycerides/5)
HDL is the good cholesterol. If it goes up,total cholesterol goes
up but your risk becomes less based upon total cholesterol to
HDL ratio. The results of your last blood test are actually pretty
good.Of course,Doctors always want perfection.

Isn't it strange that when HDL goes up the total goes up. This means I could get my total in order by bring down my HDL to a very low level. Then everyone would be happy and I could be accepted by the insurance company as being a low risk.

Does anyone else find this strange??????

Default cholesterol/hdl

Yes,I agree.
The cholesterol/hdl ratio is certainly more meaningful
than total cholesterol. Some doctors are slave to numbers
and pay very little attention to logic.

Well, I think that the ratio is just now being recognized as important and a lot of doctors were trained to look at total cholesterol only.

Your numbers are all going in the good direction. The lowering of the triglycerides is often considered FAR more important thatn the cholesterol numbers. But your ratio is improving greatly.
