I grew up in Surrey and we used to do most of our shopping in Cloverdale and Langley. I also used to roller-skate in Langley every week, back in the dark ages when they still had a roller rink!

I echo Glenda's standing invite... the more, the merrier!!!

And Glenda - I have actually been to a roller rink (with real roller skates) when they had one at Oak Bay Rec waaaaaaaaay back when...... in the semi-dark ages. LOL

Julie, either Oak Bay was anachronistic, or you're a lot older than I thought! Does that mean I have to start showing you some respect as an elder citizen?? Naaahhhh ... ain't gonna happen kid!!!

I think they tore down the roller rink in Langley in the late '50s or early '60s. Back in the mid 50s we used to hitch-hike our way to Langley and back unless we managed to hook up with someone with a car who'd drive us home - stupid high-school students back then were totally naive and almost criminally innocent and so were our parents!!!! And nothing nasty ever seemed to happen.

Some parts of the "good old days" really were good!!!

Oak Bay was an odd place to be sure - the roller rink was in the back, where in later years the antique shows were held. Back when men wore monkey suits and women (and girls my age) wore long dresses.....late 70s, early 80s?

I went there skating once when I was 12 (1979) with my very helpful sister (you can imagine how helpful she was, right?) who swung me around. I took a nasty spill that wound me up in ER with a broken arm - so much for roller skating!!!!!

Seems that sports weren't really my thing..... my first slow pitch league game I slid into 2nd base and tore my Achilles tendon (at least I made it on base...).

Hmmmm maybe running isn't such a smart idea.... Did I mention that I am signing up for the TC 10K this year - and maybe the Royal Victoria half marathon if I am able? Yes, I'm nuts!!

Quit quoting your mother! You are NOT nuts!! I envy your ability to run - I wouldn't be able to run even a 1/2K - some days I can't even walk around an 18-hole golf course!

Even I think the half is a little ambitious - but it's a big goal to shoot for.

Right now I am just getting back into training - maybe tomorrow I will go for a little walk around Elk Lake....

;~)

I'm trying to remember where Oak Bay Rec WAS! Was it over there behind/beside Oak Bay High?

(and that's lunch on the 7th? or more dinner-ish?)

Jude, I didn't go back in this thread to check, but I THINK it's lunch at Ma Miller's. By the way, any time any of your men would like to join us, John is game, but he won't come if he's the only one! And most men seem to like pub food -- kinda like the Nutra System for Men TV commercials.

Edited to add: If I'm reading Julie right, it would be the current Oak Bay Rec Centre building - at least that's where they've held antique shows! I think the original was across Oak Bay Ave. from there -- I've seen an archival map showing it there in the early part of the 20th century! (wish I had a copy of that map!!!)

My first experience on ice skates had my ever-helpful sister swing me into the wall and I broke my brand new front tooth......this was right after my SECOND broken finger healed from another two episodes of her helpfulness.

I gave on skating after the OBR incident.

My SO won't come (Mr Anti LC) but ex DH might be persuaded, esp if Anny can make it (they know each other). He does LC most of the time.

Ma Millers was one of the options and I'm fine to go with that.

Yes, Glenda, that is where I was thinking of. I don't get out to OB any more - too far from home.
