Default Signature Guidelines

Signature Guidelines

Signatures are a fun way to personalize your posts and share information about yourself. However, it must be remembered that they appear below every single one of your posts. They should append your messages, not out-do them. There is some 'netiquette' that should be followed.

Please keep signatures short and sweet. Large photos belong in the free gallery space provided, not in signatures. You don't even need to provide the link. The icon appears automatically.

Here are the guidelines by the numbers:

Update: A new change will do the following, it will place the signature in fixed-size rectangle. If the signature fits the size, it will be displayed as usual. If the signature is too large to fit into the rectangle, only a portion of the signature will appear, matching the size of the rectangle.

1) We ask that signatures be no larger than 300 x 120 pixels, as illustrated below. Note that the height mainly applies to images (text will wrap), but the same approximate size applies whether you have one big image, several smaller images, or just text.

Why a size limit? Because many members have small monitors and/or bad eyesight and use a screen resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

Update: The width is now dynamic, and will be resized based on the reader' browser.

Here is what the proper signature size looks like on such a monitor.

Now look at what happens if we were to double the size of that image to 600 x 240:

Here is a signature image that is too large.

Note that one now has to scroll from side to side to read the conversation!

2) If you are posting a link with a very long url, please use the [ url] [ /url] tags around it. For more info on how to use them, click here. Otherwise, similar sideways scrolling will occur as it did in the example above.

3) Please note that signature content is subject to the forum rules. Content that is deemed to be offensive, devisive, inappropriate or commercial/spam will be removed. Please use your good judgement and avoid inflammatory subjects.

If your signature is intrusively large or inappropriate, you may be asked to edit it, or we may do it ourselves.

Thanks for your co-operation!

Yes! No problem.

We're not going to be nit-picky if it's a little bit over. The main problem is when they're too wide.

Actually, I am glad you did this. Even with my moniter set the way it is, I find I have to scroll sometimes. Annoying.

Hi Kristine,
For months I've been trying to attach an image. Every time it comes out as a big x.
This morning I thought I was successful because
the image came out . But I went back to the post after a few hours and
again it came out as a big X.
I uploaded it from my web site. I followed the directions.
What am I doing wrong ?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Kristine, I would like to add that I'm a contributing member to my signature page. How do I do that?

Orchids... I'm not sure, but it sounds like it's your link text copied wrong. That's what happens when the x appears. Where is the image now? Here in the gallery?

Jackie... Do you mean the image that some other people have in their sig? I'm not sure, but next time you see it, right-click on that image , then select "properties". That will give you the link. Highlight and copy the url it gives you. Then you can [ img](link)[/ img] as usual.

Some sites do not want people to use their images, so they may work for a while but then disappear and the little red X will take the place of the pciture. (I have heard that they change the URL of the image so your old one becomes invalid.) Linking like that uses the bandwidth of the site where you found the image, so it does cost something.

Try downloading the image to your disk or hard drive and then posting it as an attachment.
