Default Spaghetti squash sighting!!

It is the season for catching that elusive spahetti squash again!!

Waitrose had them this evening, so I bought 5. Last year I found out that they will last several weeks uncut so I stocked up as last time they were only available for 2 weeks!

Actually, if carefully stored away from frost, damp, and not too warm, they will last for months provided they have not been bruised. My parents used to grow them, and store them to eat over the winter.

_Do_ wrap them in newspaper just in case though. If they do turn yucky, they tend to turn into a fragile shell full of disgusting slime that breaks open when picked up....

If you keep the seeds, they are fairly easy to grow - much the same as courgettes or flying saucers (pattypan squash) except you pick those young rather than fully-grown - start off in little pots on a windowsill, then plant out in the garden in a compost-rich bed with plenty of space for them to ramble over. Keep well watered, and hand-pollinate the female flowers to ensure a good crop.

Thanks for that suggestion Izye! I never thought of trying to grow them myself.
