Default Potassium Orotate? What is it please?

I've just asked for potassium tablets in a chemist and have bought 500 mg tablets of potassium orotate. The leaflet gives the dose as 1 to 3 tablets a day for 40 days then discontinue for a month.

It also says potassium oratate is useful for "substance" or "matter transfer". As this is a translation from the Russian, I wonder what they are getting at? (I live in a Russian speaking country.)

All I wanted was a regular potassium suppliment to help with my slightly high blood pressure and health in general but I've never heard of "orotic acid" which is the dictionary translation of the acid of which these tablets are a salt.

The leaflet does say they are completely safe and there is no danger of overdose.

If any of the chemically minded is able to help out I'd be obliged. I like to know what I'm taking!

Thanks in advance,
Robert

"Orotates are mineral salts of orotic acid — used by plants and animals to make DNA and RNA. Hans Nieper, a physician and dabbler in offbeat theories of gravitation, used orotates clinically prior to 1980. He thought that orotate salts, being neutrally charged, pass easily through cell membranes. In effect, orotate ferries the mineral atoms into cells and tissues, producing higher concentrations.

Nieper promoted orotates as treatments for nearly every ailment imaginable and was consequently ignored; most of his medical claims were never rigorously tested. But in certain applications — such as athletic performance — where his ideas have recently received scientific scrutiny, they have been found to work. Nieper may have been on the right track after all.

Potassium orotate is used to treat symptoms of magnesium deficiency: diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, and heart disease. Nieper combined potassium and magnesium orotates to treat cardiovascular diseases. Other applications include wound healing, immune enhancement, depression and anxiety."

Thanks Karen,

Based on what you said I think I can safely start taking it.

Best wishes and thank you again for your time - I'll let you know if it works on my blood pressure.
