If you do nothing else this week
Always choose to walk. For years weve been told that 10,000 was the optimal number of steps we should be taking daily to maintain our health. Its a figure that has often been criticised as unscientific (and even linked to a Japanese marketing campaign to promote pedometers). But a new study has found that 9,000 to 10,000 steps a day can indeed lower our risk of an early death or heart-related event, and upping the pace may lower the risk of dementia too.
Simply walking as much as you can sends your body the signal that youre a thriving individual whos engaging with life. And its a lot easier to fit in more steps than you may think:
Consider walking to work, school or wherever you have to run errands.
Get off the bus a few stops early or park further away from your destination.
Walk for 15 minutes every lunchtime (in nature if possible).
Try a quick walk around the block before dinner and/or after dinner.
Find a local walking group and try out a session.
If you usually meet friends for a drink or meal, schedule regular walks together instead, as a way of catching up.
And dont worry about counting your steps (unless you want to of course). If you take every opportunity you can to walk somewhere, youll soon be racking them up.

Obviously we're here to count our steps, but some good tips there for doing more!
