Hi Bawdy--You just mentally "eye-ball" your portion to include the drink or dessert in the 1/3 carbey food amount. Personally--if I'm going to have dessert (don't drink, so I don't have to worry about that)--I just let my dessert be my 1/3 portion of carbs for that rm. And yes--if you're going to have a bit more dessert or drink--just eat some more protein/lc veggie first, to even it out. I just try to think of my protein/veggie as the basis of my meal--and all the rest is added sparingly.
