Default Statin Therapy Not Warranted for a Person with High LDL on LC Diet

I found this on a carnivore Facebook page. It's from the Endocrinology & Diabetes and Obesity journal. One of the authors is Ben Bickman. Love him!

Here's the summary:

Quote:
Extensive research has demonstrated the efficacy of the LCD to improve the most robust CVD risk factors, such as hyperglycemia, hypertension, and atherogenic dyslipidemia. Our review of the literature indicates that statin therapy for both primary and secondary prevention of CVD is not warranted for individuals on an LCD with elevated LDL-C who have achieved a low triglyceride/HDL ratio.

This is amazing. The whole idea of diet instead of drugs needs all the support it can get.

A disconcerting fact is how both professionals and civilians still scorn this concept, reflexively.

If I "fixed it with diet" that wasn't what was wrong with me.

If the diet or other lifestyle change came in a pill then it would be gobbled up.

True. But for so long, the excuse was "people won't do that." Now we must demand that they be given a choice.

I like Bikman as well. This is an excellent review, and the paper goes into detail about blood lipids as valid biomarkers, primarily LDL-C, and how a low carb diet (LCD) can help people avoid the dangers of high triglycerides and low HDL. The comparison of reactions to lipid profiles between people on low fat diets compared to those on LCDs are extremely valuable to anyone concerned about long-term health and the impact of a well-designed lifestyle in support of good health. Bottom line, and something that's been frequently observed and discussed on this forum is that those who follow a LCD typically have a different lipid profile than those following other ways of eating. This is important, especially when one is dealing with physicians who tend to think that biomarkers believed to indicate good and poor health are the same for everyone. Not true. A whole statin industry is based on this belief system, and with the revenues realized from the sale of these pills, there is no incentive to discover the truth.

Thanks, Bawdy. This is one I've saved and bookmarked for continued reference.

In a world where the only things to eat were places with a sufficiently large number of franchises, statins would still be a poor answer to the problem. They shift lab numbers while wreaking havoc elsewhere in the body.
