Default Lower Dementia Incidence Linked With Vitamin D Supplements

Quote:
Vitamin D supplements were linked with lower dementia incidence and longer dementia-free survival, prospective data showed.

In a sample of 12,000 older adults, exposure to vitamin D supplementation was associated with a 40% lower dementia incidence rate compared with no exposure (adjusted HR 0.60, 95% CI 0.55-0.65)

Might be a "health effect" since it's not a common supplement, in my experience. Because I talk it up.

I discovered (from Toxic Superfoods) that my SAD lamp is enough for some exposure like during a yoga session. I don't think it can hurt, especially since we're in the frozen north and even the crocus are still sleeping.

I live in Florida, get moderate amounts of Vitamin D that way, but I also take supplements.

As long as you don't take too much, D won't hurt you. But it is oil soluble, so do your research on how much you should take.

I grew up in Pompano Beach and moved up to Fort Pierce when Broward County got too crowded for me.

How about you?

Because I'm keto, I do take supplements, because I know I'm not getting the vitamins that some fruit and veggies offer. It's working for me, I'm healthy for my age.

This is behind the supplemental minerals I'm doing on my program: calcium, magnesium (which I've taken on and off for years) and potassium. A neat thing is how what I'm doing now has lowered the need for two vital supplements for mood. I've dropped many entirely, which is a very hopeful sign.

It seems that, like the Inuit, when we eat more carnivore, we don't need the RDA the way a plant eater does. Interesting!

I'm so low from a disastrous menopause and undiagnosed autism and the resultant stress and it all culminated in Lockdown. Which I managed in a fairly good mental state because I could actually rest from a lot of demand I couldn't meet.

But I was getting better much more slowly until I tried this new thing, which is a lot like the old thing but with the puzzling parts removed!

Good idea to get your blood levels of D3 checked every year. I was quite low when I wasn't supplementing, even though I live where the sun shines plenty. I aim for 50-60 ng/ml and hit that with 5000 iu a day, and a bit more at times.

Good article. While I strongly advocate D3 supplementation and as much sun as one can get, this study is an epidemiological exercise and can't isolate for vitamin D as the cause. Further research is required, as many of us who take D supplementation and get outdoors frequently (without sunscreen) are also hyper-focused on health and live a healthy lifestyle that in some way may delay or prevent dementia as we age. There's no doubt in my mind regarding the importance of vitamin D, however, and for those of us who are older and can't convert sun into D as efficiently, it's a no brainer to supplement.
