Hi teresamay,

I guess you know I'm from Edmonton!

Hi Jenny! Nice to meet you.

teresamay & I work in the same area and are walking buddies (she's a great motivator).

Rocky

Hi teresamay and Rocky_Cdn,
Fellow Edmontonian here. I have been eating the low-carb way for about a year now. I feel great and believe this is a way of eating for life for me. I am always interested in hearing about low-carb 'finds' in the city and am always on the lookout for more myself. I was on Whyte Ave the other day and found a new low carb store. They are open, but the shelves weren't quite full yet. They had La Tiara brand taco shells, which I haven't seen anywhere else in the city. They are 5.99 for a box of 18 and they are 1 net gram of carb each. I haven't opened them yet, but have heard very favourable reviews of them. I applaud your commitment to walking, exercise I admit is the one area I fall short in. Good to hear from other Edmontonians.

Hi Luminette!

That's great news! We saw tortilla shells in a health food store in Southgate, but I can't remember the price. I bought Xanthan Gum there. Sometimes we go walk there at lunch, when it's raining or way too windy.

Congrats on your success so far!! That's awesome!!

Rocky

hi all

Im heading to Edmonton this weekend and am trying to figure out where to go out to eat. I did see that one of the Boston Pizza's (i think that was it) had low carb items. So far im thinking of going to the outback and passing on that reeeeeally good bread and that reeeallly good drink and then eating all the veggies but the carrots.

any other ideas out there?

Luminette:

Can you tell me more about the store on Whyte Avenue. Where is it.

I tried the Panago's pizza and found it quite good.

I also purchased some low carb buns at the Health Food Supermarket just south of Calgary trail and Whyte Ave (10 net grams).

Hi lcharach
The low carb store on Whyte Ave is located on the north side of the street between 108th and 109th st. It is in the same block as Boston Pizza and is next door to a store called Polly McGoos. When I went last week the store wasn't full of stock yet, but hopefully they would have more selection now. I did also notice, but forgot to mention earlier that they also carried a line of Atkins supplements and vitamins. There is another low carb store that you may or may not be aware of, it is called The Low Carb Gallery and is located on the south side of 51st Ave. It is west of Calgary Trail and East of Southgate Mall (in the new section of the strip mall that London Drugs is in - to the east of LD). Hope this helps.

Hi Lenni,

I haven't been going out to eat much, but I've heard a lot are very accommodating.

This link below has some nutritional info on restaurants, even Red Lobster:

http://www.dietfacts.com/fastfood.asp

What part of the city will you be in?

Lcharch:
I've been wondering about the pizza. Great news!

Luminette: Yes, tell us more about the store on Whyte Ave!!

Rocky

Hi, there...

some really good "low carb friendly" places are Moxies, Montana's and Alberts..they are all very accomodating and don't charge extra for the privelidge.

Oh... I wanted to add, I've found most restaurants here very good about checking for ingredients that I can't have (like MSG), or doing substitutions (veggies/salad instead of fries).

well...... when i go to Edmonton, I am all over (except for millwoods road which I spent over an HOUR trying to get off of)...will be on the outside of downtown and for sure sleepin in the west end since its my quickest exit...

Im hoping the significant other comes and treats me to the outback...im just going to pretend that whatever they put on the steaks isnt full of sugar...im soooo close to breaking another barrier so im pretty nervous. Im telling people i am now 5.5 pounds away from where i used to whine about needing to lose ten lbs. so aside from the wonderful opportunities credit cards allow me to go crazy, a trip to the city right now is kinda scarey (tooooo much good food)

I think a steak and some veggies from Outback would be awesome - but I'd have to avoid that Bloomin' Onion!

Hope you have a fun trip!

I eat out alot at Swiss Chalet. I just get the quarter chicken breast and ask for caesar salad with no croutons. Or you could get the chicken breast with the steamed veggies (few shredded carrots that I don't eat) and get a caesar salad as an appetizer.
It is very good and I never feel deprived. The best Swiss Chalet is on 170 St. Never, ever eat on 97th. We have given it 3 tries and it was gross each time, so never again!
