You look at the number of carbs that are polyols and subtract them.

Eg I have a bag of Thorntons diabetic stuff here which says

Per 100g

Carb 57g

-Sugars 7.7g
(Fructose 4.4g)
-Polyols 47.7g
-Starch 1.6g

so you count 57-47.7g = 9.3g per 100g

The bag was 115g and had around 10 chocolates in it, so they work at at approx 1g net each.

Thats how I count it anyway!

Hi Angipea

Yes what Doogie has said is very true, subtract the polyols, but count the sugar and starch as carbs.

One word of warning with any low carb chocolate items don't overdose, not just because of the laxative effect of some of them which contain malitol, but as with alcohol the calories can quickly mount up and slow your weight loss.

Not meaning to be a party pooper, just a friendly warning and something to think about.

Gemma

The diabetic range of Thorntons chocs are OK. Some have more carbs than others, so read the labels.

The diabetic ones, not the normal ones!

The answer is probably yes..... They are made with malitol, a sugar alcohol (polyol) which has loads of carbs, but you don't count them as they have "minimal effect on blood sugar"

But some people can be ultra-sensitive to all sweetners, some people have problems with some polyols and are fine with others, and excessive consumption can have a laxative effect.

Gemma70: If you read the breakdown I gave in the second post in this thread you can see that although they look high to start with, you subtract the polyol carbs, so the bag of thornton diabetic chocolates I got worked out at 1g carb per chocolate.

Keep an eye on your kids then - they tend to have a worse reaction to polyols than adults as their bodies don't really accept it at all. My friend's kid was on the loo all night because she stole one of Mum's sweeties.

I buy the bags of single choccies occasionally and then allow myself only one or two a day. They do have a laxative effect if you're not careful! The Vanilla Fudge bar had the worst effect on me.

The bars of plain and milk chocolate are very good for cooking, they have a lovely texture and don't cause such a drastic effect!

Ohh - I was thinking small kiddies! Big lads can cope with it then.

Now I really liked the pineapple boiled sweets and didn't like the blackcurrant ones. I did enjoy the strawberry ones though.

I've written to Thorntons to ask if they plan to start using Splenda to stop the 'tummy issues'.

My favourite is the Vanilla fudge bar - but I'm careful not to eat more than half of one in 48 hours I also like the chocolate mint creams, but again I limit them to one every now and then instead of a dessert at a restaurant.
