How dark the stick is does not matter. Mine never went beyond light pink and I've dropped 60 pounds. Some people spill more ketones than others - the amount is more genetic than anything.

I know you can lose weight without ever turning the sticks any color, but I didn't know if you lose weight faster if your sticks are darker.

The one aspect of the CAD that I do use is that if I have an excursion from Atkins/PP, I keep it to under an hour and don't berate myself or obsess about it afterwards. But I cannot do it every day so I do not follow it as a lifestyle. With one excursion a month I find that I might retain water for a couple of days but if I get right back on track the excursion has no effect in the long term.

In the FAQ's of chapter 11 (induction) Dr Atkins says
Quote:
There are many reasons that a person's lipylosis test strip would be varying shades of purple. Each person's metabolism is different and therefore will turm the sticks a varying degree of purple. In addition the time of day, whether or not you exercise and what you ate at your last meal will all affect the test strips. Dont worry about the exact level of ketosis indicated by the strip. The important thing is to see how your clothes are fitting and what the scale says. And, remember, you dont necessarily need to use the strips at all.

In over 140 pounds lost I never saw more than the lightest possible change in colour on those pesky strips!!

I suggest rationing them out throughout the day. Not only is it easier to do (unless you want to eat unseasoned meat for 2 out of 3 meals a day) it keeps your blood sugar more stable. Eating 0 carbs and then a 20g carb spike is not the best thing to do. That isn't to say that there havent been times I blew all or almost all of my carbs on one meal and then had to have 0-1g carb foods for the rest of the day. I just try not to make it a habit.
