Default Vitamin D deficiency and migraine headache - Dr Gominuk M.D

I watched a interesting lecture on the success that Dr Gominuk M.D., a neurologist, has been having treating patients suffering from migraine headaches.

She is a doctor that is thinking outside of the box. Through trial and error and listening to her patients she discovered that the majority of her patients with unexplained headaches were ultimately sleep deprived caused by being vitamin D deficient. It is an interesting story how she figured it out.

What I found interesting was the information that she learnt on vitamin D such as:
-D hormone is unique among our hormones because we make it on our skin from a specific wavelength of light, UVB. Why not from UVA which is present year round and is not affected by the seasons?
- our D hormone fluctuates with the seasons; it goes higher in the summer and lower in the winter.
- Any animal that can devise a way to eat more and get strong in summer, and eat less and sleep more in the winter, will have a better chance of survival.
- the low D message is; sleep longer, store fat for spring. Our metabolic rate goes down (we hibernate). As the D level falls the thyroid hormone goes down, we survive the winter by sleeping more hours and using less energy.
- unfortunately the majority of western society is vitamin D deficient year round thus the brain thinks it always needs to maintain precious fat reserves to survive.
- D hormone deficiency causes sleep disorders; insomnia, sleep apnea, REM related apnea, unexplained awakenings to light sleep, inappropriate body movements during sleep.
- The body will heal itself in deep sleep. When the sleep improves the headaches, seizures, tremor, back pain, balance difficulties, depression, memory loss, etc. all get better.

let us remember Winston Churchill’s words, "To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often".

Hmm. That's interesting, and may be of benefit to someone.

But I find it a little strange. You see, I have just recently had to increase my anti migraine medication (Topamax) from 150 to 175 mg per day because I was still getting 3 to 4 migraines per week. And this is in spite of taking 10, 000 units of Vitamin D daily for several years now. The D has helped my joint pain enormously, but has never affected my migraines at all.

I just thought it worthy of mention that Vit D won't automatically help everyone.

I hope correcting Vitamin D levels can help someone sleep. Mine D is corrected now and my sleep is worse than ever. There must be more than one cause.

I'm already a little on the high side according to the LC Dietician. She said new evidence is showing calcium problems (I forget which now, grrr) at serum D over 80.

I don't know who is sillier, you for saying that, or me for answering it seriously

I forgot to mention the sleep. The Vitamin D has definitely helped with that. Because I am no longer woken by the joint pain.

That is great. Relives joint pain, good to know.
Before this WOE I was having some excruciating deep bone pain. So many things like that have cleared up maybe due to taking supplements, IDK?

Might be. I know the joint pain disappeared for me with taking wheat out of my diet. Back in the beginning I would eat half a roll at work sometimes, and wake up with painful joints in the morning. Same with any and every stray into wheat. It's 100% unattractive to me now.

Magnesium has been shown to help migraine symptoms. In some cases it's even stopped them, both the frequency and the severity.

D3 should not be taken after 3 p.m.; it will interfere with sleep.

I'm not sure if this has been posted before on the forum. Ivor Cummins has made a good summary lecture on vitamin D and some of the research behind it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3pK0dccQ38

Ivor also has an interesting lecture named, "The Cholesterol Conundrum", which reviews studies on cholesterol. He is an engineer by trade that wanted to share what he learnt when he researched his high ferritin & GGT. His blog is "The Fat Emperor".

Haven't been troubled by migraines since I stopped eating gluten. Oddly, ran into a lot of folks on the celiac forums who cured them that way too.
