Default Splenda Question

How many teaspoons are in one packet of splenda? I am making a something that calls for 3 packets of splenda, but I don't have the packets I have the big box. Any ideas?

Default Not sure... but

I think that one tsp would be one packet. I'm only guessing that because I have some Sweet and Low packets and that's what they are.

Whatcha making?

1 packet is equal to two tsp.

Same as any other artifical sweetener. Only when it says "measure cup for cup" is it equal tsp to tsp.

Splenda says that you do use cup for cup, so then it would be 1tsp right??

Exclamation

The packets are more concentrated than the box of bulk sweetener.

There's approx. 1/4 tsp of powder in the little paper packet, but it is as sweet as 2 tsp sugar. The bulk powder in the box has been fluffed up more, to make it easier to scoop and measure just like sugar. It's less concentrated, and 1 tsp will be equivalent sweetness to 1 tsp sugar.

Agonycat is correct .. most sweeteners .. Splenda, Equal, Sweet'n'Low, Sugartwin etc, etc ... are standardized so that one packet/sachet = the sweetness of 2 tsp sugar, even though the actual amount of powder is much less than that.

The box or the fine print on the little packet should say somewhere the "sweetness equivalent". 3 packets would equal 6 tsp of the bulk product.

I suggest doing a taste test .. add 3 or 4 tsp first, then taste. If you think it needs more sweetening, great .. add more. But you may be surprised that you actually need less than the recipe calls for

Yikes! Never use Splenda cup for cup, it can be incredibly bitter!

Greywolf, since we are blessed to have access to Sugar Twin and Splenda in Canada, try a half and half combination of the two for sweetening, and start with 1/4 of the recommended amount in a recipe.

It really does taste better and saves you some carbs. Sugar Twin is half the carbs of Splenda.

Default Sugar twin vs. Splenda...

Karen, now I know you cook way more than me, but I have found that Sugar Twin gets WAY, WAY more bitter when cooked than Splenda. The store I got to ran out last week so I thought I would give STwin a try with these pecan thingys I made and yuk...I had to throw them out. I only had a 1/4c in there and the recipe calls for 1/2 c of sugar. You're right I never do that cup for cup thing b/c everything is soo darn sweet. I wonder if it would have tasted this sweet before WOL?

Just my two cents...I'm a splenda lover (plus it's from my dad's company sooo...I can get really cheap),
Erin
