When I was a teenager, I took high doses of Iron for 10 years. I was so tired, and the stupid Dr. never checked any further than my hemoglobin, which was of course low. He couldn't understand why it never came up, and never checked my ferritin count.
When I was pregnant with my 1st daughter, a different Dr. sent me to a hemotologist who discouvered my Thalassemia. He said if I wasn't pregnant, so the baby could use up my excess iron, I would have had permanent liver damage from the excess iron buildup.
I have never heard of it causing weight problems. 2 out of my 3 daughters carry the trait too, and they are both about 105 lbs. my Dad is 6 feet and has it and has weighed 140 lbs all his life.( skinny).
Now- my Drs. all say it is O.k. to take a multi vitamin with iron. My Daughters have even had to take iron from time to time, as their iron count was low. These days Dr. are aware to check the iron count, as well as the hemoglobin.
If you are worried, tho, you can get vitamins without iron in it.
