Atkins Nutritionals, doctors urges USDA to include low-carb option in upcoming Dietary Guidelines

In an open letter published this morning in the New York Times and Washington Post, a group of more than 50 doctors spearheaded by Atkins Nutritionals, Inc., is calling on the US Department of Agriculture to include a low-carbohydrate diet as a “viable option for Americans” in the 2020 Dietary Guidelines.

The author sent me a .pdf of it...now I need to figure how to add that.
She will keep looking for a link.

An "open letter" is an Ad and it seems the papers do not put them on-line.

Thank you Janet. Here is a blog comment in response to this ‘open letter’
This was written by Chris Palmer,MD and he is one doctor that signed the open letter. It is very thorough and informative.

Thanks, Janet. Interesting and important message on Atkins letterhead. The endorsements are by an extremely strong base of experts with clinical experience.

Don't listen to Atkins' call for cutting carbs in the dietary guidelines

I don't disagree with their message, but it's a little hard to convince people that they're not biased when the message is coming from a commercial concern.

Obviously, it's big companies and lobbying groups that can afford to take out full page ads in the NYT, but I wish there were a better route.

We can all submit our own individualised personal comments to the committee as well. I sent mine back in April.

I felt a letter signed by experts in clinical dietary health on an Atkins letterhead could become a lightning rod. And . . . here we go . . .

Don't listen to Atkins' call for cutting carbs in the dietary guidelines

https://thehill.com/opinion/healthc...tary-guidelines

A quick Google of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, the organization with whom the writer is associated, showed how ridiculously biased this article is:
1. They promote vegan-ism
2. One of the primary donors is PETA
3. Only 5% of the board are actually physicians

Total garbage - but someone will grab hold of this opinion piece and quote it as fact.

I still remember Tom Naughton brilliantly skewering PCRM in the Fathead movie!

That's an excellent suggestion. I just meant in terms of awareness raising. Like I'd love to see an open letter in the NYT signed by Drs. Ken Berry, Brian Lenzkes, Tro Kalayjian, James DiNicolantonio, Jeff Gerber, Ted Naiman, Georgia Ede, etc. who are practicing doctors without the commercial bias of something like Atkins to skew the perception of why the message is out there. I know Gary Taubes foundation is supposed to be funding studies not public awareness, but maybe some non-profit like that would be a better funder for that kind of campaign than a business that stands to profit from the dietary guidelines.
