Default Folic Acid amount

For those of you who take folic acid - how much do you take? Dr Atkins recommended 20-60 mgs per day for menopause symptoms, but that would be 20-60 pills a day.

Thanks.

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate it.

I don't have access to the books right now, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a typo. He talks about the need for much, much more folic acid than the RDA (400mcg), in both the Age Defying book and the Vitanutrients book. His recommendation for "basic" amounts is 2-3mg, and then he recommends more for certain issues. I have capsules from Vitacost that are 1000mcg each, and they also have them at 1200mcg, but that's still a lot of pills. I was hoping someone had some experience with using his guidelines.

Thanks!

I take 800 mcg twice a day.

Ignore the RDAs they are to prevent disease, not to promote health.

You need foic acid at all stages of life.

Well, 1000mcg is 1mg. So two pills a day isn't that bad is it?

No, but that is the basic. 20-60 is what is recommended for menopausal symptoms or for osteoporosis. Oh, well - I'll just take what I can.

20-60 mg? That seems a bit excessive.

I just looked up the dose in DA's Age-Defying Diet. He recommends 3-6 mgs/day, 3,000-6,000 mcg for generally healthy people.

I can see him recommending higher amount for specific health problems but the amounts you quote seem excessive.

It reminds me of that Mark Twain quote:

If you have the book handy, look it up under "Menopause" and see if the print version say 20-60 mg. I have the Kindle version. Thanks!

Under menopause I see 30-60 mg. That is MG. AND it's to be taken with progesterone cream.
