Default low carb and blood sugar numbers

I was on low carb for most of last year, lost some weight but my BS numbers never went down. It was food bank food, challenging to do low carb, but the right price.

I restarted low carb this week and I'm curious. I've lost 6 pounds but my BS numbers are going UP. I'm not as interested in weight but I really want to control my diabetes.

What are the important differences between low carb for weight loss and low carb for blood sugar control?

Most people experience their blood sugar going down, plummeting even, on low carb. Can you give us some menus? Are you taking any drugs or anything other than diabetes? If so, what are they?

Hi Kathi, it all depends on what you are eating. What type of diabetic are you?

For people who are diabetic not all carbs are the same. There are fast acting and slow acting carbs. The slow acting ones are the veggies with cellulose in it (tree type bark dna)

These are bad: Fast acting carb food are tomatoes, fruit, peas, corn, carrots, potatoes, breads, cereals, oats, pasta, rice, milk, flour, ketchup, tomato paste, ect...

These are good: slow acting carb veggies are snow peas, green beans, rommaine/butter/iceburg/ect lettuces, brocolli, cauliflower, asparagus, red and green bells peppers, shallots(certain type of onion), okra, kale, spinach, eggs, cheese, heavy cream (but not cottage cheese). Is what i can remember right now.

Regardless of whole wheat, fiber rich they say don't go buy that the above list I gave are slow acting.

If you are eating sugar free stuff that can also spike your sugar levels.

The only way I got my BG under control was following Dr Bernsteins plan. He has a guideline of 6, 12, 12 carbs for the 3 main meals. He also states wait 4 hours before eating again.

I am a type 2 diabetic with insulin resistance. I take no medicines. Through following Dr. Bernstein's Diabetic Solution I managed to get my BGS downs to 90-105 within a matter of 2 weeks.

If you can goto the local library and see if you can check out the book.

As nancy indicated posting what you had would helps us to make suggestions.

Not to throw the thread off-topic, but cottage cheese is one of my staple LC foods. I realize it has a rather substantial amount of carbs but I budget for it. Is there a particular reason that cottage cheese is not considered a good carb? I would hate to have to find a substitute!

Monday Girl, for diabetics Cottage Cheese has the milk sugar in it. That is quickly absorbed and will spike a diabetics blood sugar. For type 2 diabetics who are insulin resistance, it will also spikes insulin production which creates a circular affect of eating and then being hungry because of the excess insulin in the system.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks for the explanation!

Menu - brunch zucchini, egg, cheese omelet

dinner, all veg, whatever I have in the fridge. This week broccoli. It was on sale.

My only med, other than insulin is Plaquenil for my R arthritis, which I've had since I was a small child and fell through the ice while skating.

Thanks all for the help and stories.

I got a copy of the Bernstein book yesterday at a garage sale. The lady selling it said her husband didn't like it.

EDIT - I'm wondering if it's because my meter is older and not working too well. I called Bayer and they're sending me another. It's 2 years old.

All veg dinner is a problem. Read it.Read it. Read it. Read it again, keep reading.
The more out of plan you are, the higher your numbers.

I've read the whole book and didn't find anywhere that it said an all veg dinner is a problem.

Where is that? Sure don't want to do things wrong.

Thank you.

Hey Kathy, carbs have to be limited to 12 grams for dinner. And you need to eat the carbs that are on his list.

Laura Dolson's summary of his diet reads:
Quote:
Low volume diet - Dr. Bernstein has found that in some people, bulky fibrous foods can cause a blood glucose rise from a reaction in the small intestine (apart from carbohydrate). Therefore, he advocates not eating too much vegetable at once, even if they are very low carb. While I don't doubt that this "Chinese Restaurant Effect", as he calls it, is true for some people, I personally have not found it to be the case (I am prediabetic and test my blood glucose), and am guessing I'm not alone, especially amoung non-diabetics.

Here are more tips to get started on his diet plan:

All the best,
