Default #^%* Scales

We all know the scales lie. We know they dissapoint us and don't move when they should. Sometimes they surprise us in a good way. That's how the ride works.

This is a serious question: what do you do if you think the scale is really lying its butt off? As in the number is unbelievable. Normally, as in before I lived here in the hinterlands, I would simply get in the car and drive to the doc's office then get on his scales. They, unfortunately, never show a fantasy number. But, my doctor is a 3 hour drive away and, get this, I don't know anyone here who owns scales except me.

I got on the scales just a little while ago and they said 185. I don't believe that is right. At first I thought I read it wrong, so I tried them again. They were a little slow responding but they said 185 again. I replaced the batteries because of the slowness and it said 185. So I made DH get on them and they gave him a number that is dead center in his weight range. Then I got a 5 pound bag of flour and got on the scales and it showed me at 190.2. Put down the flour it said 185.

I honestly do not believe it is possible. I have been carrying a lot of water weight for days and it did come off today, but this is 8 pounds below what I weighed 10 days ago. So my question is if you are in the middle of nowhere and really don't believe the scale, what would you do to check your weight?

I don't really have any clothes to check my size with or I would do that.

Sweetie, why not 185? Why not believe that you are going to be fabulous?

I had an 11 lb whoosh once on my first lc adventure. I don't know how it was possible. I weighed myself every morning, and between one morning and the next I had lost 11 lbs. I can't explain it, but it was gone.

Oh wow, Congrats!
I agree with LowcarbUgh also.
Believe it, plus it will boost your spirits of dieting!

Ways of checking if your losing or not- hmm.. You could go far out and tape measure parts of your body, but it'd take some time to see that difference. Taking pictures along the way also prove if you've lost. Also do little things, like seeing if your clothing feels bigger on you.

Honestly I agree..you were very thorough, did all the kinds of checks I would do! I'd believe it.

I've certainly seen some variations (today was a number 10 lbs. down from my start, now it isn't my real weight average, but I could believe it since I tend to see some swings within a week).

I say congrats!

I had the same issue, and pretty much did the same thing. I weighed myself, weighed myself with a 20 lb dumbbell, then weighed the dumbbell separately. All the numbers checked out okay. Apparently it was my perceptions that were off.

Hey. If it weighs him correctly, and the flour correctly, and it gives you the same weight repeatedly, then EARTH TO LIZ: that's your new weight.

However, you *could* be a little bit dehydrated or something causing it to fall slightly lower-than-normal from which it will rebound, if that will make you feel better, LOL!

Liz,

You gotta be open to the possibility that it's correct. You've been stalled for a while right? Aren't you due for a loss?

Congrats!

Sometimes you just know things.

This morning the scale said 193. I didn't drink 8 pounds of water last night. Jumped DHs weight up 5 pounds. A difference of 8 pounds for me and 5 pounds for him overnight, with both increasing, doesn't make sense.

I guess it's time for a new scale. Last night's 185 could be right but so could this mornings 193. No way to know. <sigh>

Damned scales!
