Default confused about cream

O.K. i went to the grocery store today and actually stood there for 10 minutes reading the different labels for cream, heavy whipping cream, half&half, table cream, etc.... HELP!!

so what does atkins say we are suppose to use? i am baking a crustless quiche and it calls for cream. what kind do i use? i couldn't find just regular table cream so i ended up buying heavy whipping cream. can i use this in my coffee also? or should i be using some other kind of creamer?

heavy whipping cream is 5 grams just for 1 tb. isn't that a lot?

Lisa

Fitday says that 1 ounce of heavy cream is 0.831.
I have always counted 1 gram for each ounce of cream I use.
This has never seemed to put me in a stall.
2Tbsp = 1 ounce
Hope this helps.

Cream is less carbs than milk, therefore you want to use heavy whipping cream as your first choice instead of half and half. Even when I make something that calls for milk I use heavy whipping cream thinned with water.

thanks everyone. i made my quiche last night with heavy whipping cream, but i wasn't able to eat it for breakfast because i was too busy at work to stop to eat. but, i put it in my decaf coffee and yummy!!!

i just have a difficult time dealing with the fact that it is 5 grams of fat per tablespoon. i know, i know, fat is good!! i have to keep reminding myself of that and get out of my fat is bad mindset.

my book of food counts lists heavy whipping cream at 0.3 grams of fat per tablesoon. nowhere near 5 grams of fat so enjoy it in your coffee and cooking.

the back of the carton reads: 1 tablespoon is 50 calories,
5 grams of fat, and the best part - 0 carbs. i think your book is wrong.

Your book is definately wrong.

Heavy whipping cream: 1 oz = 2 tbs liquid

.8 gr carbs
11 gr fats

so per tablespoon of liquid heavy cream= .4 carbs & 5.5 fat

I think the USDA Database - which is the carb counter we have under Low-Carb Tools at the top of the page - is very accurate for nutrition counts.

Here it is, for 1 cup of heavy whipping cream:

Total Carbohydrates 6.64 g
Dietary Fiber 0.00 g
Total Protein 4.88 g
Total Calories 820.58
Total Fat 88.06 g

A different POV--I switched from half-and-half to heavy cream for a while and actually gained weight. Too much fat and calories for me; I'm close to my goal weight and do have to watch my calories. For me, the few extra carbs in half-and-half were less harmful than all the extra fat in the cream.

YMMV,

Skywind

A couple of weeks ago I switched from Creamora to heavy cream in my coffee. I'm not losing like I'd like to, but I have no idea if that's the culprit or not. A couple of days ago I was at Sam's Club and found liquid coffee creamers in those little plastic cups like you get at McDonalds, etc. It's called, "International Delight, grade A Half & Half". The package says that each serving has 10 calories and 0 carbs. Tastes delicious.
