I've been taking approx 1000mg of Magnesium at night for constipation and it works brilliantly. However (I won't bore you all with the reason I am asking!) I am wondering if I should also be taking Calcium too? I've been reading up on it but I'm finding it all a bit confusing, with some people saying some types of Magnesium aren't absorbed etc? Many thanks to anyone who can shed a bit of light for me!

The whole idea of using magnesium for constipation is to use the sort that isn't absorbed. That way it can get to the bowels and do it's work, drawing in water to make things move along. Magnesium citrate and oxide are the two usual sorts for that purpose.

Also, don't take calcium, it can do just the opposite and constipate you.

Thanks for that Nancy-that will do for me! I'm taking Magnesium Oxide and it's working well. My only worry is whether the body eventually gets used to it?

That I don't know.

Also, make sure you're getting enough salt in your diet. Phinney says that low sodium will also cause constipation. Your body can rob the intestines of the water they need. Read that thread in my signature about salt.

This is something I didn't realize until I read Phinney's book, and heard some podcasts.

That's interesting Nancy as I don't eat a lot of salt. I don't add it to food and don't eat a lot of packaged stuff either so I think I'd better up my intake!

Miso soup, broth, bullion are good sources of sodium. Make sure you don't get the reduced sodium sort though. He recommends 5g a day which is about 2 tsp.

Default Magnesium citrate vs magnesium oxide

[QUOTE=Gostrydr]Magnesium oxide absorbs a well as any other form of magnesium. And better than most.

This is not correct. Magnesium citrate consistently shows better bioavailability than magnesium oxide. Here are just two of many studies:

If you're treating constipation, you don't want it to absorb well. That defeats the entire purpose.

Where do y'all buy your Mg supplements? I checked my Kroger and they only had magnesium oxide. Do any of the other major chains carry it in another form?

I don't buy my supps from a regular grocery store or even the drugstore. I go to the specialy stores or online.

just use Google shopping to find the current best deal. Mg citrate is the same no matter the brand.

Citrate form is not as commonly found in stores as oxide. Rather than search around town for it, easier to add a bottle of it, NOW is usually a good price, to my Amazon orders. I often use the supplements I would buy anyway to hit the $25 free shipping.
