See how it goes, I guess. He says he's been only counting calories for six months, it wouldn't take that much body fat to supplement those 1300 calories and protect his lean mass for that period of time.

If he gains muscle on this program, I'm afraid I'll have to be rude and assume that he might be lying. It just seems more likely that somebody would lie about gaining muscle on 1300 calories a day, than that it would be true. Or that they might be worse at counting calories than they think they are.

Here's a video from four months ago, you can see that he's leaned out somewhat since then, although he was already very lean--and I'd say his muscle mass has also decreased, I'm open to other opinions on that. I don't see much here that I wouldn't expect from a forced calorie restriction accompanied by some weight bearing exercise. First you get ripped, and then you get emaciated.

There is at least one study out there showing guys gaining muscle while eating as little as 800 calories a day--but they lost a lot of fat as well, so it wasn't really low calorie in that sense.
