Default Atkin's Diet and Constipation

I am just starting the Atkin's Diet once again after trying it a couple of years ago. With a the new headlines about researchers discovering that a high protien - low carb diet is good, I have decided to try it again. When I tried a couple of years ago, I lost 12 lbs in two weeks, but I stopped because I got very constipated. Also, I wasn't so sure that the Atkin's diet was healthy. Could someone please give me some suggestions about how to avoid constipation while on this diet? Also, I take a multivitamin everyday plus extra vitamin C. Should I be taking more vitamin supplements? Thanks.

Suzieplump:

I have battled constipation with and without Atkins, but I found my solution, psyllium husk swill! I take a tablespoon of psyllium husks mixed with a can of Hansen's Natural (splenda sweetened) soda three times a day. If you are taking medication, you need to take it at least 1 hour before or after meds. Eating plenty of fat on Atkins also helps. I call it psyllium swill because I eat it with a spoon, I've been thinking about mixing it with low carb jello to see if it's any better. You can also buy capsules, but they didn't work as well for me and are much more expensive.

hi Suzie,

Yes, psyllium helps a lot of folks. There are other things that help too, including adequate hydration .. be sure to drink lots of water, and FAT .. which will help to keep the stools soft as well. Click on Low Carb Tools from the orange menu bar near the top of the page. Look for Low-Carbing and Intestinal Health .. you'll find more ideas that will be helpful for you to cope with this problem.

All the best to you; low-carb really is the way to go
