Default Anyone tried Kombucha?

Just wanted to find out if anyone on the forum has tried drinking or even making their own kombucha? And, if so, what were your experiences?

It's supposed to have lots of goodies in it that you can't get elsewhere, so I was thinking of adding it to my list of supplements etc.

I've bought some that seems "kosher", so to speak, but it seems to keep me awake, despite the alcohol content. And I don't really want to drink anything alcoholic during the day!

Looking forward to hearing your comments.

We make our own - the kids especially like it. I'm not sure it's so alcoholic as you think.

I got slightly tipsy off it. My sister-in-law brought some over and I had it and then felt slightly dizzy. Turns out my brother is really sensitive to it also.

That's interesting - maybe it's because we make our own, it's not so bad.

No one else got tipsy off it, probably if I hadn't had an empty stomach it wouldn't have happened. My SIL thinks my brother and I are nuts.

I bought a case of small bottles to try it out before setting up a brew system. I've heard people claim health benefits and I'll try most anything. The taste is unusual but not unpleasant, a kind of a sparkling wine mouth feel but I haven't felt anything alcoholic in my batches but it's winter & cool in the house still. I haven't been brewing it, drinking it long enough to have an opinion. I will continue though.

I used to make it and drank a glass every morning. It doesn't have much alcohol in it. If it did, it would have interacted with my meds, and that never happened.

I bought a second batch from this health-food shop and I really didn't like it. Even though everybody says it doesn't have much alcohol in it, whatever kind of alcohol it was didn't sit well with me and I have in the meantime given it up as one of those things that you try and, well, put in the file marked "Experience".

Pity about all those German books I bought about kombucha and kefir! Maybe I'll buy some kefir grains one fine day and try that...

I love Kombucha and buy a bottle of it every week at the healthfood store I love how good I feel after drinking it. It is very thirst quenching and nourishing!

Hope you're not drinking too much of the stuff - it does contain alcohol, you know! - and alcohol tends to interfere with weight-loss goals as it gives the liver extra work to do. It also provides you with an extra source of energy which your body will use preferentially over any other food until the alcohol has been broken down.

Watch the scales and check if the kombucha is helping or impeding your weight loss, would be my little tip.

All the best and cheers!
