I have found refernce to the "meat fast" in a book titled "How to get the most from your low carb diet", but I do caution you that approx 50% of the protien one ingests is converted into carb by way of GLUCOSE, which we are trying to bring under control. The only thing not converted to carb (according to Atkins) is fat. I've tried the fat fast and lost 2 lbs in about 5 days. I consumed triple cream brie cheese, macadamias, olives, pate and chopped chicken liver. I am continuing on a sort of modified fat fast whereby every 3 days or so I will have a normal day of LC eating. The fat fast was the only way I was ever able to register any level of ketosis on the strips.

This is the ratio when a person is consuming a diet that's also high in carbs. In Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, he explains what happens with a low carb diet ..
Quote:
The liver (and to a lesser degree, the kidneys and intestines), instructed by the hormone glucagon, can very slowly transform as much as 36 percent of (protein) into glucose — IF blood sugar descends too low, IF serum insulin levels are inadequate (as in diabetes) and IF the body’s other amino acid needs have been met.

http://www.diabetes-normalsugars.co.../chapter9.shtml
Meaning .. only the protein that's in excess of your body's requirement *may* be converted AND only if your blood sugar is too low and warrants this conversion. Typically, with a ketogenic diet, most proteins will be de-aminated (amino acid portion removed) and the remaining molecules converted to free fatty acids.

You can read more about this .. here.

Ok, I have a general comment to make - btmncrt...cutting down the group for having a discussion, and alluding to things such as gossip is just plain rude and doesn't help anyone. The point, from my understanding, of this group is to help one another achieve goals, have some support and some understanding. I do not get your point on religious stuff...I have yet to see that anywhere...

Granted, some of us may reference God within our own personal quotes, however, in my case, that is a PERSONAL thing that helps to keep me strong - I certainly am not "forcing anything on to anyone".. we all come from different backgrounds, situations and circumstances, and a little tolerance and constructive advice goes a long way - much further than a negative attitude. I don;t think it really matters one iota who starts what thread - quite frankly, myself, I am new to this, and mistakes happen, I am not that great at posting in necessarily the "right" threads either - but you know what? It doesn't matter!
